Guillermo Heredia not in lineup

Guillermo Heredia is not in the lineup Monday for Seattle's game against Cleveland.

Fantasy Implications: Heredia has appeared in 38 straight games, slashing a miserable .175/.252/.219 with only five extra-base hits and three RBI. Jacob Hannemann will take his place in center field and bat ninth.

Jean Segura to miss Monday's game

Jean Segura is not in the lineup Monday for Seattle's game against the Athletics.

Fantasy Implications: Segura sprained a finger in Saturday's contest against the Indians, sidelining him now for two consecutive games. The injury is not considered serious, but whether the 27-year-old shortstop will recover in time to finish the season is not known at this time. Taylor Motter will again take his place at shortstop.

Mike Leake credited with loss

Mike Leake (10-12) pitched 6 2/3 innings on Sunday, yielding three runs on seven hits in Seattle's 4-2 loss against the Indians. He walked none and struck out five.

Fantasy Implications: Despite losing his second straight game, Leake has pitched well since being traded to Seattle from St. Louis on August 30. In the 29-year-old right-hander's five Seattle appearances, four have been quality starts while recording a 3-2 record, 2.53 ERA and 27/2 K/BB over 32 innings. He has not surrendered over three runs in any of his Mariner starts.  Leake is scheduled to make his final start of the 2017 campaign on Saturday against the Angels in Anaheim.

Jean Segura out of lineup

Jean Segura is not in the lineup Sunday for Seattle's game against the Indians.

Fantasy Implications: Segura exited Saturday's game with a sprained finger, and is considered day-to-day. Depending on the severity of the injury, it is possible the 27-year-old shortstop will not be available for the Mariner's remaining seven games. Taylor Motter will take his place at shortstop and bat ninth.  Ben Gamel will take Segura's spot at the top of the order and leadoff for Seattle.

Nelson Cruz homers again

Nelson Cruz went 2-for-5 including a solo home run and scoring two runs in Seattle's 11-4 loss to the Indians on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Cruz' home run in the eighth inning was his 37th bomb of the season, and the fourth time he has homered in as many games. In that span, the veteran designated hitter is slashing a remarkable .429/.556/1.286. Fantasy owners should look to Cruz to extend his latest power surge through the final seven games of the 2017 campaign.

Andrew Moore credited with loss

Andrew Moore (1-5) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over four innings, and was tagged with the loss in Seattle's 11-4 defeat to the Indians on Saturday.  He struck out three and walked none.

Fantasy Implications: Moore has done an admirable job filling in as a member of the Mariners' depleted rotation. In his three September starts coming into tonight's game, the 23-year-old right-hander recorded a fine 3.24 ERA and 0.84 WHIP over 16 2/3 innings.  However his 2017 campaign's 5.34 ERA and meager 4.7 K/9 illustrate the true limitations of Moore's fantasy value.  He is scheduled to make his last start of the season on Friday against the Angels in Anaheim.

Nelson Cruz hits walk-off home run

Nelson Cruz went 2-for-3 including a walk-off two-run blast to lead the Mariners to a 3-1 victory over the Indians on Friday night.

Fantasy Implications: Cruz is closing out the 2017 season on another power surge. His walk-off homer off of Cody Allen in the bottom of the ninth inning was his third opposite field long ball in as many games, and his 36th home run of the year. In addition, the veteran slugger continues to tack onto his American League RBI total, which now stands at 114. With eight games left to play, Cruz has the chance to hit reach the 40 homer mark for his fourth straight season.

Edwin Diaz records win

Edwin Diaz (4-6) worked around a walk, pitching a scoreless ninth inning and earning the win in Seattle's 3-1 victory over the Indians on Friday night. He walked none and stuck out none.

Fantasy Implications: Diaz was summoned in the ninth inning to protect a 1-1 tie. After retiring the side on 10 pitches, he was credited with the win when Nelson Cruz hit a walk-off two run homer in the bottom of the frame. The 23-year-old fireballer has not allowed a run in nine of his last 10 appearances. Although his occasional control problems have been the main reason for his elevated 3.41 ERA, Diaz' 32 saves, 1.18 WHIP and 84 K's over 62 1/3 innings have provided fantasy owners much value throughout the 2017 campaign.

Erasmo Ramirez records a quality start

Erasmo Ramirez allowed one run on three hits while walking none and striking out 10 over eight innings in Seattle's 3-1 win over the Indians on Friday night. He did not factor into the decision.

Fantasy Implications: Ramirez pitched an absolute gem, but exited the game after throwing 105 pitches (70 for strikes) with the score tied 1-1. The ten strike outs were a season high for the 27-year-old right-hander. His only blemish of the game was a solo homer hit by Giovanny Urshela in the third inning. Ramirez has now delivered seven quality starts in his past eight outings. He and Mike Leake have proven to be the most reliable members of Seattle's rotation in the latter part of the 2017 campaign. Ramirez will take his respectable 4.35 ERA and 1.14 WHIP into Oakland on Wednesday for his next scheduled start against the Athletics.

Mike Zunino out of lineup

Mike Zunino is not in the lineup for Seattle's game Friday against the Indians.

Fantasy Implications: Zunino will head to the bench for a well-deserved breather after starting 10 of the last 11 games. The 26-year-old backstop is batting an outstanding .324/.410/.588 with two home runs, six RBIs and five runs scored in that span. Carlos Ruiz will take his place behind the plate, and will bat eighth.

Nelson Cruz adds to American League leading RBI total

Nelson Cruz finished the night 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk in Seattle's 4-2 loss to the Rangers on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: The homer pushed Cruz' American League leading RBI total to 112, seven better than Jonathan Schoop's 105. It was his second long ball in as many games.  In his last 17 games, the veteran designated hitter is batting a phenomenal .317/.431/.550 with four home runs, nine RBIs and 13 runs scored. Fantasy owners of Cruz can be none other than pleased with the multiple category contributions  (.286 AVG, 35 HR, 84 R) he has provided them throughout the 2017 campaign.

Robinson Cano hits solo shot

Robinson Cano blasted a Keone Kela fastball into the center field stands for a solo-homer in the ninth inning, going 1-for-4 in Seattle's loss to the Rangers Thursday night.

Fantasy Implications: Cano is slashing .342/.375/.474 in his last nine games with one home run, six RBIs and five runs scored. He is currently in the midst of a modest six-game hitting streak. The veteran second baseman's 2017 production (.284 AVG, 22 HR, 93 RBI and 75 R) is approaching that of last year's (.296 AVG, 29 HR, 92 RBI and 94 R), giving fantasy owners an appropriate return on investment. Look for Cano to finish out the season on a high note.

James Paxton credited with loss

James Paxton (12-5) was tagged with the loss after surrendering two runs on four hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings in Seattle's 4-2 defeat to the Rangers on Thursday night. He struck out four.

Fantasy Implications: Paxton is still trying to shake off the rust since coming back from an extended stay on the disabled list due to a left pectoral injury. In his two starts since being activated, the 28-year-old southpaw is 0-2, having yielded five earned-runs on eight hits and four walks over five innings. The plan is for Paxton to make two more starts before the season ends. Despite the two poor starts, Paxton sports a fine 3.03 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 10.3 K/9 for the 2017 campaign. His next scheduled start is Tuesday against the Athletics in Oakland.

Aldrick Robinson with two catches in Week 3

Aldrick Robinson reeled in two catches on four targets for 23 yards in the 49ers 41-39 loss to the Rams on Thursday night.

Fantasy Implications: Aldrick was on the field for only 27 of San Francisco's 87 snap counts on offense, which actually exceeded the 22 he saw in the first two weeks of the 2017 campaign. He now has recorded a meager three receptions on six targets for the year. Needless to say, he is not a primary receiving option for the 49'ers at this time. Unless an injury occurs to one of the 49ers' starting wide receivers, Robinson offers relatively no fantasy value.

Marquise Goodwin with 63 yards in Week 3

Marquise Goodwin made two receptions on five targets for 62 yards in the 49ers 41-39 loss to the Rams on Thursday night.

Fantasy Implications: Goodwin's yardage came mostly on a 50-yard reception at the end of the third quarter on a drive that eventually resulted in a 49er touchdown with 12:50 remaining. The 26-year-old speedster has yet to catch a red zone pass. In three games, he has collected eight receptions for 109 yards. Though Goodwin offers big-play upside, his fantasy value remains limited until he can see more consistent production.

Trent Taylor makes touchdown reception

Trent Taylor made three catches on four targets for 32 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers 41-39 loss to the Rams on Thursday night.

Fantasy Implications: Taylor scored his first NFL touchdown, reeling in a three-yard pass from Brian Hoyer with 5:08 left in the game. The rookie fifth round pick from Louisiana Tech is currently serving as San Francisco's primary slot receiver. He has the hands and quickness to eventually turn into an appealing PPR option, but will need more passing volume from the 49ers' offense to garner any effective fantasy value.

Pierre Garcon has seven reception night

Pierre Garcon hauled in seven of 10 targets for 142 yards in the 49ers 41-39 loss to the Rams on Thursday night. He did not find the end zone.

Fantasy Implications: Garcon had a huge game, making several acrobatic catches throughout the night, while averaging 20.3 yards per reception. In the third quarter, he made a 19-yard toe-dragging reception on the sideline that was properly ruled a catch after official review. His longest grab came in the fourth quarter on an impressive 59-yard reception down the left sideline with about six minutes left to play. A solid chemistry seems to be developing between quarterback Brian Hoyer and the 31-year-old veteran receiver. Look for it to continue in Week 4 when the 49ers travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals.

Robbie Gould misses critical extra-point

Robbie Gould knocked down both of his field-goal attempts, but missed one of four extra-point tries in the 49ers 41-39 loss to the Rams.

Fantasy Implications: Gould's field-goals from 36 and 48 yards makes him a perfect 6-for-6 from the field this season. His extra-point attempts were his first tried this year, being that San Francisco failed to score a touchdown in its first two contests. Unfortunately, Gould's missed extra-point attempt, following a Garrett Celek touchdown catch in the fourth quarter with 12:50 remaining, turned out to be costly. It forced the 49ers to go for a would-be game-tying two-point conversion after Carlos Hyde scored on a one yard plunge with 2:13 left in the game. The conversion failed on a Brian Hoyer incomplete pass to Trent Taylor. Still down by two points, Gould then executed a perfect onside kick that Raheem Mostert recovered at midfield. Gould's chance at redemption would end however, when the 49ers turned the ball over on downs, unable to get into field-goal range.

Felix Hernandez credited with loss

Felix Hernandez (5-5) was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on two hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings in Seattle's 8-6 defeat to the Rangers on Wednesday night. He struck out four.

Fantasy Implications: Hernandez pitched a perfect first three innings, but then derailed in the fourth, allowing the first five Rangers to reach base. The veteran right-hander was then pulled from the game after throwing 67 pitches with the bases loaded and one out. Unfortunately for Hernandez, the three inherited runners scored when Andrew Albers, who relieved King Felix, gave up a grand slam to Rougned Odor. This was the second start for Hernandez after coming off his second visit to the  disabled list this year due to a sore right shoulder. He will hope to make it beyond the fourth inning, and improve his 4.57 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in his next start, which is scheduled for Monday in Oakland against the Athletics.

Tony Zych likely done for season

Tony Zych experienced soreness during a bullpen session on Wednesday.

Fantasy Implications: Zych has been sidelined by a strained flexor bundle in his right elbow which forced him onto the 10-day disabled list on August 22. It was hoped that the 27-year-old right-hander would be able to return for at least one appearance prior to the the October 1 season finale. However, after today's setback, his chances of a return in 2017 is unlikely. If so, Zych will finish the year with a 6-3 record and 12 holds, while recording a respectable 2.66 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 7.7 K/9.

Hisashi Iwakuma to miss rest of year

Hisashi Iwakuma, who has been trying to recover from a sore shoulder since May, will most likely not pitch again this year.

Fantasy Implications: Iwakuma has suffered repeated setbacks in his attempt to recover from a sore shoulder that placed him on the disabled list after a May 3 start against the Angels in Seattle. The 36-year-old right-hander was 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA in six starts this season before his injury. “He had a tremendous season last year,” manager Scott Servais said. “Unfortunately, things happen, and he just couldn’t get over the hump with the injury. He has worked his tail off. Nobody has worked harder. He’s tried everything he could to get back. It’s just not happening.” Iwakuma's tenure with the Mariners is probably over. The Mariners are now expected to exercise a $1 million buyout clause, which will make him a free agent.

Nick Vincent tagged with loss

Nick Vincent (3-3) was credited with the loss while allowing two runs on three hits over one inning in Seattle's 3-1 defeat to the Rangers on Tuesday. He struck out one and walked none.

Fantasy Implications: Vincent has hit a wall in his last three appearances, surrendering six runs on seven hits over 2 2/3 innings, while being saddled with two losses in that stretch. The 31-year-old right-hander, who has been solid throughout the 2017 campaign, saw his ERA rise from 2.10 to 2.87 during his current funk. He still, however, ranks second in the American League with 27 holds, trailing only Taylor Rogers of the Twins. With a fine 1.12 WHIP, look for Vincent to add value down the stretch in leagues that count holds.

Mike Leake credited with quality start

Mike Leake allowed one run on six hits while striking out five and walking none over 6 2/3 innings in Seattle's 3-1 loss to the Rangers on Tuesday. He did not factor into the decision.

Fantasy Implications: Leake has now registered three quality starts in four games since becoming a Mariner via an August 30 trade with the Cardinals. In said time, he is 3-0 while recording a stellar 2.13 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 22/2 K/BB over 25 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old right-hander looks to keep it rolling when he faces the red-hot Indians at Safeco Field on Sunday.

Mike Leake earns win

Mike Leake (10-12) surrendered one run on five hits and one walk over 5 2/3 innings in Seattle's 8-1 win over the Rangers on Wednesday.  He also struck out five.

Fantasy Implications: Leake was one out away from logging his third straight quality start, but was lifted after throwing 90 pitches, and surrendering an RBI single to Robinson Chirinos.  The 29-year-old right-hander appears rejuvenated, winning all three of his starts since coming over to Seattle via a trade with the Cardinals on August 30. While donning a Mariner uniform, he has posted a solid 2.41 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 17/2 K/BB over 18.2 innings. Leake looks to keep rolling when he is next scheduled to toe the rubber on Tuesday against the Rangers at Safeco Field.

Andrew Moore slated for start

Andrew Moore will start Sunday's game against the Astros in Houston in lieu of Ariel Miranda, who was bumped from the rotation.

Fantasy Implications: After only giving up one run on one hit and one walk, while striking out seven over six innings in a relief role on Monday against Texas, Moore has been immediately inserted back into the rotation. Only last Sunday it was declared that Moore had lost his starting role. "Certainly we'll look at him possibly sliding into the rotation for us in that spot [Miranda's] moving forward," manager Scott Servais said. "He was awesome. I can't say enough about the job he did. He's got plenty left in his tank, which is great to see from a young guy at this time of the year." However, with a 5.36 ERA and 4.8 K/9, fantasy owners should exercise caution before inserting Moore into their lineups.

Ariel Miranda lifted from rotation

Ariel Miranda was lifted from the rotation, and will not make his once scheduled start on Sunday against the Astros.

Fantasy Implications: Miranda imploded on Monday, giving up four runs on six hits and walking three in only 1 2/3 innings. In his last 12 starts, the 27-year-old southpaw posted a troubling 6.71 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 4.1 BB/9 and 2.6 HR/9. "He's running on fumes right now," manager Scott Servais said. "I think that's what we're seeing. I appreciate how he competes and goes out there. There are certain nights he doesn't have it and he didn't have it at all tonight. We'll take a look where he's at in a couple days from now." Miranda, who prior to this season had never thrown more than 101 innings, has already logged 158 in 2017. Thus it is not surprising to see him tiring down the stretch. How Miranda will be utilized, if at all, for the rest of the year is not known at this time. For now, Andrew Moore will take over Miranda's spot in the rotation.

Kyle Seager hits solo shot

Kyle Seager drove a Cole Hamels' fastball into the right-center field seats for a solo home run in Seattle's 5-3 loss to the Rangers on Monday. It was Seager's lone hit in four at-bats.

Fantasy Implications: Seager is now riding a modest eight-game hitting streak, albeit producing more than one hit in only one of those contests. He has slashed .300/.344/.733 with four home runs and five RBIs in that span. The 29-year-old third baseman's .255 AVG, 23 HR, 74 RBI and 61 RBI has certainly moved the fantasy needle in most settings. Imagine how much further if Seager were able to produce a string of multi-hit games, or hit some of his home runs with men on base.

Mitch Haniger hits long ball

Mitch Haniger went 3-for-4, including a double and a two-run homer in Seattle's 5-3 loss against the Rangers on Monday. He also scored once.

Fantasy Implications:  Haniger is swinging a sizzling stick, slashing a phenomenal .489/.489/.889 with four home runs, 11RBIs and eight runs scored over his past 11 games. Subsequently, the rookie outfielder has seen his batting average rise from .240 to .278 in that span. Haniger missed 66 games this campaign due mainly to injury, but has still produced 12 home runs, 41 RBIs and 47 runs scored. The Hanimal's ceiling remains high as long as he can stay healthy.

Monday, September 11, 2017

Ariel Miranda earns loss

Ariel Miranda (8-7) lasted only 1 2/3 innings surrendering four runs on six hits and three walks, and was credited with the loss in Seattle's defeat to the Rangers on Monday. He struck out none.

Fantasy Implications: An absolute stinker for Miranda and his fantasy owners. The 27-year-old left-hander threw a whopping 50 pitches in less than two innings, in which only 24 were for strikes. It appears that with each subsequent start Miranda goes from bad to worse. Since the beginning of July, he has spun only two quality starts in 12 appearances. Tonight's poor performance bumped Miranda's ERA from 4.72 to 4.90 for the year. Only GM's that can stomach extreme derring-do should consider inserting Miranda into their lineups at this crucial time of the fantasy campaign. His next scheduled start is Saturday against the Astros in Houston.

Jarrod Dyson to undergo surgery

Jarrod Dyson elected to have surgery to repair a groin injury, and will miss the rest of the season.

Fantasy Implications: On Monday, manager Scott Servais confirmed that Dyson did not make the team's trip to Texas, but opted to have surgery to repair a "core muscle injury." The procedure is considered minor, but nevertheless the 33-year-old outfielder will miss the remainder of the season. Dyson finishes the year after slashing .251/.324/.350 with five home runs, 30 RBIs, 56 runs scored and 28 stolen bases. A free agent after the season, Dyson has declared he will test the open market.

Yonder Alonso is not in lineup

Yonder Alonso is not the lineup for Seattle's game against the Rangers on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Yonder will head to the bench with southpaw Cole Hamels on the hill for Texas.  He will get to clear his head after going 0-for-12 in his last three games. Danny Valencia will take his place at first base and bat sixth.

Ryan Weber outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma

Ryan Weber was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Weber was activated from the 60-day disabled list, and immediately outrighted to the Rainiers. The 27-year-old right-hander has been recovering from a right strained biceps since mid-May. The injury restricted him to only one 2017 appearance with the big-club, back on May 13 in Toronto. In 2016, while with the Braves, Weber posted a feeble 5.45 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 23/5 K/BB over 36 1/3 innings. Without saying, Weber offers no fantasy value at this time.

Zac Curtis claimed off waivers

Zac Curtis was claimed off waivers by Philadelphia on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Curtis was designated for assignment by the Mariners on September 4. The Phillies evidently liked what they saw in the 25-year-old southpaw to claim him off of waivers. He made appearances in three big-league games this year for Seattle, all in relief, giving up three unearned runs on three hits (one for a homer), two strikeouts, one walk, two hit-by-pitch, and two wild pitches over 4 2/3 innings.  His main body of work was performed at Double-A Arkansas, where he posted a 3.51 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and an eye-opening 60/19 K/BB over 51 1/3 innings. He will likely have a role in the bullpen, and pitch in low-leverage situations as the season winds to close.

Nick Vincent saddled with loss

Nick Vincent (3-2) allowed three runs on one hit and one walk (intentional) over two-thirds of an inning, and was charged with the loss in Seattle's 5-3 defeat to the Angels on Sunday. He struck out none.

Fantasy Implications: Vincent has not pitched a clean frame in his last four outings, a stretch in which he has surrendered five earned runs, six hits, and three walks over three innings. Two of the runs charged to Vincent on Sunday were unfortunately dictated by the circumstances of the game. After Ben Revere singled and stole second for the Angels, the 31-year-old right-hander then intentionally walked Mike Trout, who came around to score on a Justin Upton double. Upton advanced to third on an Albert Pujols' fly-out to center, and then scored when Marc Rzepczynski, who relieved Vincent, uncorked a wild pitch. Vincent, however, has been a steady force in the Mariners' bullpen, as attested by his fine 2.52 ERA, 1.07 WHIP,  48/13 K/BB and 27 holds for the year. He has given up only two long balls over 60 2/3 innings of work. In leagues that count holds, Vincent can provide ample fantasy value.

Erasmo Ramirez involved in no-decision

Erasmo Ramirez allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out seven and walking none over 6 2/3 innings in Seattle's 5-3 loss to the Angels on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision.

Fantasy Implications: Ramirez has now pitched six straight quality starts. His only damage Sunday came on two solo shots, one by Mike Trout in the first inning, and another by Luis Valbuena in the seventh. The 27-year-old right-hander has been a solid part of the Mariner rotation since coming over from Tampa Bay via a trade on July 28. He has lowered his season's ERA from 4.80 to 4.35 since the trade, and sports a very good 1.16 WHIP. Ramirez next start is schedule on Saturday against the Astros in Houston.

Jarrod Dyson may be shelved for season

Jarrod Dyson, who is nursing a recurring groin injury, may not play again this season.

Fantasy Implications: Dyson had recently been activated from a stint on the disabled list that was caused by a groin strain. But in his second game back, he aggravated the injury when he broke from the batter's box in a September 2 game against the Athletics, and has not been able to play since. The 33-year-old pending free agent attempted pregame drills on Friday but was not able to finish. The setback makes it likely that Dyson may not be able to play again this season.

James Paxton to be activated from DL

James Paxton will be activated from the disabled list, and is scheduled to start against the Astros in Houston on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Paxton, who was placed on the disabled list on August 10 because of a left pectoral strain, has been rehabbing successfully performing bullpen sessions and simulated games. The 28-year-old left-hander was having a superb year prior to being sidelined, posting a 12-3 record with a 2.78 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.  Paxton will be facing a formidable Houston offense, so fantasy owners should determine their needs before immediately inserting him into their lineups.

Felix Hernandez to be activated from DL

Felix Hernandez will be activated from the disabled list, and is scheduled to start against the Rangers in Arlington on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Fernandez was placed on the disabled list on August 2 for a recurring shoulder bursitis and has been rehabbing while throwing bullpen sessions and simulated games. He has posted a 5-4 record with a 4.28 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.  Fantasy owners may want to take a wait-and-see approach before inserting Fernandez into their lineups, as the southpaw's first assignment will be against a potent Texas offense.

Andrew Moore bumped from rotation

Andrew Moore, who was originally scheduled to start against the Rangers in Arlington on Tuesday, will instead be replaced by Marco Gonzales in the rotation.

Fantasy Implications: After posting a 1-3 record with a 5.89 ERA and unpalatable 4.1 K/9 over 44.1 innings in eight appearances, Moore's removal from the rotation should come as no surprise. The Oregon State alumnus most likely will have a role in long relief for the remainder of the season.

Cano hits a pair of doubles

Robinson Cano went 3-for-4, including two doubles, two RBIs and scoring a run in Seattle's 8-1 win over the Angels on Saturday.

Fantasy implications: Cano has been swinging a torrid bat of late, slashing .441/.500/.706 with two long balls and nine RBIs in his last seven games, and has seen his batting average rise from .272 to .284 in that span. Cano has 21 HR, 87 RBIs and 70 R for the season, continuing to provide fantasy value across multi-categories, especially from the keystone position.

Nelson Cruz hits homer

Nelson Cruz drilled a Jesse Chavez slider over the left-center field wall for a three-run homer in Seattle's 8-1 win over the Angels on Saturday.  He finished 1-for-4 for the night.

Fantasy Implications: Cruz has a moderate six-game hitting streak, going 7-for-21 in that span. The veteran slugger, however, has been on a power outage of late. Prior to last night's game, he had only one homer and four RBIs in his last sixteen contests. Yet Cruz has recorded a very respectable .284 AVG, 32 HR, 107 RBI (which leads the American League) and 75 runs for the year, which makes him one of the elite set-and-forget players for fantasy GM's in all seasonal formats.

Mitch Haniger collects a trio of hits

Mitch Haniger singled, tripled and homered, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored, in Seattle's 8-1 win over the Angels Saturday evening.

Fantasy Implications: This was the third consecutive multi-hit game for Haniger, who was a double short of hitting for the cycle. The 26-year-old right fielder batted out of the second-hole where he appears most comfortable, as evidenced by the impressive .319/.429/.503 he has produced from that spot, along with six homers, 22 RBIs and 34 runs scored in 135 at-bats. The Hanimal is performing well, and appears locked in and ready to close out the campaign on a high note.

Andrew Albers earns win

Andrew Albers (4-1) spun six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk to earn the win in Seattle's 8-1 victory over the Angels on Saturday.  He also struck out four.

Fantasy Implications: Albers has now thrown two straight quality starts, allowing only one earned-run in 12 innings. He has fared well since joining the Seattle rotation, recording a 2.67 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 27 innings in five starts. Yet fantasy GM's should be aware; Albers pedestrian 6.7 K/9, 4.52 xFIP and 87 mph fastball do call for a period of negative regression. In addition, with Felix Hernandez and James Paxton both expected to return this week, his spot in the rotation at this time is uncertain.

Yonder Alonso is out of lineup

Yonder Alonso is out of the lineup for Seattle's game against the Angels on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Alonso will take a breather on the bench as the Mariners deploy a right-heavy lineup against left-hander Andrew Heaney who is on the bump for the Angels. The day off will give Alonso time to clear his head after going 1-for-11 at the plate in his last three games. Taking his place at first base will be Danny Valencia, who will bat sixth.

Ben Gamel is out of lineup

Ben Gamel is out of the lineup for Seattle's game against the Angels on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Gamel will head to the bench as Seattle will deploy a right-heavy lineup against southpaw Andrew Heaney.  The 25-year-old outfielder went 2-for-4 last evening with a three-run homer, his most productive game in weeks. Taylor Motter will take Gamel's place in left field and bat ninth.

Mike Zunino is out of lineup

Mike Zunino is out of the lineup for Seattle's game against the Angels on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Zunino will head to the bench after starting four straight contests behind the plate. Carlos Ruiz will take his place and bat eighth.

Jarrod Dyson is out of lineup

Jarrod Dyson is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Angels.

Fantasy Implications: This will be the sixth consecutive game that Dyson will miss as he attempts to recover from  a recurring groin strain. The 33-year-old outfielder was able to play only two games since coming off the 10-day disabled list because of the groin injury.  Guillermo Heredia will take his place in center field and bat seventh.

Edwin Diaz records save

Edwin Diaz worked around a hit, allowing no runs over one inning to notch his 32nd save of the year. He also struck out two.

Fantasy Implications: Diaz recovered nicely from his last outing when he surrendered a two-run homer to Houston's Cameron Maybin in the ninth inning, thereby being tagged with the loss. The 23-year-old right-hander has been subject to the occasional blow-up of late, caused in most part by his lack of control, as evidenced by his 10/8 K/BB over his last  9 2/3 innings prior to last night's game. Diaz though is the Mariner's irrefutable closer, and should remain entrenched in fantasy lineups of all settings.

Ben Gamel hits homer

Ben Gamel went 2-for-4, hitting a three-run blast to propel the Mariners to a 4-3 win over the Angels Friday night.

Fantasy Implications: Gamel came into the game mired in an awful second-half swoon, hitting an unsightly .208/.246/ .315 with only 37 hits in 187 at-bats over 47 games. He saw his  batting average for the campaign plummet from .322 to .275 in that span. It was only the 25-year-old outfielder's eighth homer of the year. It would be prudent for fantasy GM's to wait to see if and when Gamel truly gets off the schneid prior to inserting him back into their lineups.

Mike Leake earns win

Mike Leake (9-12) was credited with the win after giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking none over six innings in Seattle's 4-3 win over the Angels. He also struck out five.

Fantasy Implications: Leake had an inauspicious first inning, giving up hits to the first three batters he faced, which eventually led to two runs being scored. The 29-year-old right-hander then bore down, allowing no earned-runs on three hits in his final five frames. It was Leake's second straight win and quality start in a Mariners uniform since being acquired by Seattle in a trade with the Cardinals on August 30. Leake had struggled since the All-Star break, but perhaps the change of uniforms is what he needed. With Seattle, Leake has spun a 2.77 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 8.3 K/9 over 13 innings.

Felix Hernanandez throws simulated game

Felix Hernandez threw 35 pitches in a simulated game on Friday and subsequently felt no pain.

Fantasy Implications: Hernandez said his shoulder felt fine following the workout, and that he expects to be ready to go in five days. The veteran left-hander is rehabbing from a bursitis in his shoulder that forced him to the disabled list on August 5. He is expected to throw a side bullpen session in a few days, and if all goes well, will rejoin the rotation either against Texas or Houston later next week, albeit on a restricted pitch count. Fantasy owners would be wise to take a wait-and-see approach before inserting him into their lineups.

Jarrod Dyson not in lineup

Jarrod Dyson is not in the lineup for Seattle's game against the Angels on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Dyson will miss his fifth consecutive game because of a strained groin. He will take batting practice to test the injury, but will not be in the lineup. Once again, Guillermo Heredia will take his spot in center field and bat ninth.

James Paxton throws simulated game

James Paxton threw 40 pitches in a simulated game Friday and experienced no pain afterwards.

Fantasy Implications: Paxton, who is recovering from a pectoral injury, will throw a bullpen session sometime early next week. If all goes well, he will be available to make a start in either Texas or Houston later in the week. The 28-year-old southpaw will initially be on a restrictive pitch count if and when he is able rejoin the rotation. Paxton, who is no stranger to the disabled list, is having an outstanding year, posting a 12-3 record with a 2.78 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.

Mitch Haniger knocks in run

Mitch Haniger went 2-for-4 while driving in a run in Seattle's 5-3 loss to the Astros on Wednesday.

Fantasy Implications: The Hanimal has been swinging a hot bat of late. In his last seven games, Haniger is slashing .448/.448/.759, going 13-for 29 with two home runs, seven RBIs and four runs scored. In that span, the 26-year-old right fielder has seen his yearly batting average rise from .240 to .262. In a campaign marred by injuries, he has produced a respectable .347 on-base percentage and .791 slugging percentage. Haniger is a good buy-low candidate in keeper and dynasty leagues, and a strong finish of the season is not out of question.

Larry Drew II signs with Heat

Larry Drew II inked a contract with the Heat on Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fantasy Implications: Drew II played with the NBA G League's Sioux Falls Skyforce last year. He appeared in 10 games primarily coming off the bench, and averaged 8.1 points, 5.9 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 23.5 minutes while shooting 47.7 percent from the floor, 40 percent from three-point range and 71.4 percent from the foul line. The 27-year-old guard also played internationally in Lithuania and Puerto Rico. Drew II last played in the NBA back in the 2014-15 season with Philadelphia where he averaged 3.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists over 12 games. He had  previously been in training camp with the Heat in both 2013 and 2014. Drew II will have a difficult time making Miami's final roster.

Kyle Seager hits another homer

Kyle Seager hit a solo homer, his only hit of the night in four at-bats, in Seattle's 5-3 loss to the Astros on Wednesday.

Fantasy Implications: Seager's solo shot was his third homer in as many games. Unfortunately, all three came with the bases empty. The 29-year-old third baseman had been scuffling in the nine games prior to his recent home run binge, slashing a dismal .152/.256/.182 and only no multi-hit games in that span. Perhaps Seager can build upon his sudden power surge to finish out the campaign.

Edwin Diaz suffers loss

Edwin Diaz (3-6) was charged with the loss when he allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one over one inning in Seattle's 5-3 loss to the Astros on Wednesday.

Fantasy Implications: Diaz was summoned in the ninth inning to protect a 3-3 tie. He was rudely greeted by Carlos Beltran, who led off the frame with a line drive double to left. After getting Juan Centeno to ground out to short, Diaz delivered a 100.2 mph fast ball to Cameron Maybin, who deposited the pitch into the right field bleachers for a two-run homer. Unfortunately for Diaz, the triple-digit fastball was the third-fastest pitch hit for a home run in the Majors this year. "I think I have to tip my hat to Maybin." the young fireballer said. "He hit a great pitch, great location. He hit it late, and it was a homer. The one to Beltran I thought was a good pitch, too. If I throw that pitch a little higher to Maybin, maybe it's a fly ball. But I thought I threw a perfect pitch, and he hit it pretty good." Diaz is one of the better closers in the American League with 31 saves. Consider this outing a blip in the radar.

Andrew Moore pitches to no-decision

Andrew Moore allowed two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out three over six innings in Seattle's 5-3 loss to the Astros on Wednesday. He did not factor into the decision.

Fantasy Implications: Moore exited the game with a chance to earn the win, but the Mariner bullpen was unable to protect Seattle's 3-2 lead. It was the 23-year-old righty's first quality start since July 8, and his second consecutive start without allowing a home run. However, with his unpalatable 2.2 HR/9, 4.1 K/9 and 5.89 ERA, fantasy owners who insert Moore into their lineups do so at their own risk. His next scheduled start is Tuesday against the Rangers in Arlington.

Tony Zych experiences elbow soreness

Tony Zych experienced elbow pain after throwing a bullpen session on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Zych was placed on the 10-day disabled list on August 22 with a right elbow flexor bundle strain. Following a bullpen session Saturday, the 27-year-old reliever felt some soreness, but an MRI exam revealed no structural damage. Zych will attempt another session this weekend. According to manager Scott Servais, "He'll throw another bullpen Saturday. The bullpen he threw the other day was really good, but something didn't feel quite right in there. So he got some pictures, and that was clear, so he should be good to go once he gets it ramped up again." The Mariners are hoping Zych can return for the last few weeks of the season if this weekend's pitching program goes well. He has been a vital part of the Mariners' bullpen with a 6-3 record, 2.66 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 45 appearances over 40 2/3 innings.

Jarrod Dyson not in lineup

Jarrod Dyson is not in the lineup for Seattle's game against the Astros on Wednesday.

Fantasy Implications: Dyson will miss his fourth consecutive game because of a strained groin. Guillemo Heredia will take his place in center field and bat ninth.

Shawn O'Malley outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma

Shawn O'Malley was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: O'Malley, who had been designated for assignment on Saturday, was outrighted to Tacoma today to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for recently acquired infielder Gordon Beckham. This has been a lost year for the 29-year-old utility infielder because of sundry maladies, including an appendectomy, shoulder injury and a concussion. Consequently, he has been only able to play in 33 minor-league games this year, at three different levels of the Mariner's organization. With the Rainiers, O'Malley appeared in 20 games and was only able to muster a feeble .205/.250/.282 slash line.

Kyle Seager hits solo shot

Kyle Seager went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Seattle's 3-1 loss to the Astros on Tuesday evening.

Fantasy Implications: Seager's homer, his second in as many nights, accounted for all of Seattle's offensive production. It was the 29-year-old third baseman's 21st dinger on the year, and the sixth consecutive season he has hit 20 or more homers. His .253 AVG, 72 RBIs and 58 R make Seager a viable option in most fantasy formats.

James Pazos credited with loss

James Pazos (4-5) faced two men over one-third of an inning, allowing one earned run on no hits and one walk in Seattle's 3-1 defeat to the Astros Tuesday night. He was credited with the loss.

Fantasy Implications: Pazos was called to start the seventh inning and protect a 1-1 tie. After getting Carlos Beltran to fly out to left, Pazos then walked Brian McCann. Pazos was then relieved by Emilio Pagan, and McCann was pinch-run for by Derek Fisher. Fisher then came around to score on Cameron Maybin's two-run homer, thereby pinning the loss on Pazos. The 26-year-old southpaw has now allowed two earned runs in his last two games, but had allowed none in his previous eight appearances. For the year, he has a 3.62 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 10.5 K/9 and a high 4.2 BB/9. With only seven holds and no saves, Pazos offers no fantasy value at this time.

Emilio Pagan coughs up game winner

Emilio Pagan surrendered a two-run homer to Cameron Maybin in Seattle's 3-1 loss to the Astros Tuesday evening. It was the lone hit he allowed over two-thirds of an inning. He walked none and struck out none.

Fantasy Implications: Pagan was summoned with one out in the seventh inning after James Pazos walked Brian McCann. Maybin, the first batter Pagan faced, blasted a 94 mph over the left-center field wall for a two-run homer which proved to be the game winner (and Houston's first hit of the game), thereby saddling Pazos with the loss. Pagan has now yielded an earned run in each of his last four appearances. Yet his 8.4 K/9 and 1.7 BB/9 over that span still bodes well for the 26-year-old reliever. He sports an acceptable 3.24 ERA and an excellent 0.96 WHIP for the campaign. Pagan holds fantasy value only in deep leagues that count holds.

Ariel Miranda hurls hitless ball

Ariel Miranda allowed no hits but gave up one run on six walks while striking out five over six innings in Seattle's 3-1 loss to the Astros Tuesday evening.  He did not factor into the decision.

Fantasy Implications: Miranda was lifted despite allowing no hits, needing 112 pitches to get through his six innings of work. The 27-year old southpaw has had trouble with his control lately, walking 10 men over 15 innings in his last three starts. In his previous 15 starts, Miranda has also been subject to the long ball, delivering 25 taters over 83.0 innings (2.7 HR/9). With a 4.72 ERA, he provides little fantasy upside. Miranda's next scheduled start is Monday against the Rangers at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

Tuesday, September 5, 2017

Andrew Moore to start on Wednesday

Andrew Moore will get the start for Seattle in Wednesday night's game against the Astros.

Fantasy Implications: Andrew Moore will start for the originally scheduled Mike Leake on Wednesday. Leake will alternatively start on Friday against the Angels instead of Yovani Gallardo, who was removed from the starting rotation, and will shift to a role in the bullpen. Moore has made six starts for the Mariners this season, compiling a 1-3 record with a 5.65 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. The 23-year-old right-hander's lamentable 3.9 K/9 and 2.7 HR/9 should cause fantasy GM's to avoid him in all fantasy settings.

Yovani Gallardo relegated to pen

Yovani Gallardo was officially removed from the starting rotation on Tuesday and will instead be used in the bullpen.

Fantasy Implications: Gallardo's poor performance as a starter has finally driven him from the rotation to a role in the bullpen. The veteran right-hander was actually effective when used in long- relief earlier in the year, recording a 1-0 record in four appearances, while surrendering only one run on five hits over 11 1/3 innings. His exemplary slash line of .132/.233/.237 allowed in relief was demonstrably better than his regrettable .284/.359/.498 relinquished to opposing batters as a starter. Mike Leake, who was supposed to start on Wednesday, will have his start pushed to Friday against the Angels in place of Gallardo. Andrew Moore will start on Wednesday against the Astros.

Evan Scribner placed on waivers

Evan Scribner was released by the Mariners on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: The Mariners placed Scribner on release waivers after activating him from the 60-day disabled list. The 32-year-old right-hander has been recovering from a strained flexor bundle in his right elbow, and was currently on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma. Scribner was acquired in a trade with Oakland in December 2015 with the hope that he would serve as a late-inning reliever. But various injuries have derailed Scribner's career, having him only to be able to make 20 appearances with Seattle since 2016.

Jarrod Dyson is not in lineup

Jarrod Dyson is not in the lineup on Tuesday for Seattle's game against the Astros.

Fantasy Implications: This is the third consecutive game that Dyson will miss because of tweaked groin injury that had put him on the 10-day disabled list a few weeks ago. Consider him day-to-day for now. Guillermo Heredia will take his place in center field and bat ninth.

Daniel Vogelbach recalled from Triple-A

Daniel Vogelbach was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma by the Mariners on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Vogelbach will be making his third appearance with the big-club this year. In his limited playing time with Seattle, he went 3-for-17 (.176 AVG) with no homers and one RBI. The 24-year-old first baseman, however, has had a successful year with the Rainiers. In Tacoma, he boasts of a .290/.388/.455 slash line, with 17 homers, 83 RBIs and 65 runs scored in 459 at-bats. He will play first base or be used as a designated hitter with the big-team. Because his playing time will once again be limited, he offers little to no fantasy value. In a corresponding move, the Mariners designated pitcher Evan Scribner for assignment.

Kyle Seager produces multi-hit game

Kyle Seager went 2-for-4, hitting a solo-shot and an RBI single in Seattle's loss to the Astros on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: It was Seager's first multi-hit performance and first homer in his last 10 games, a span where he hit only .189/.279./.297 with four RBI and two extra-base hits. The 29-year-old third baseman will have a difficult time simulating his 2016 career season (.278, 30 HR, 99 RBI and 89 R), but has still benefited most fantasy GM's this year with .254 AVG, 20 HR, 71 RBI and 57 R.

Marc Rzepczynski takes loss

Marc Rzepczynski (2-1) allowed a single and a walk to the only two batters he faced, but suffered the loss when both came around to score in Seattle's 6-2 defeat to the Astros.

Fantasy Implications: Rzepczynski entered the game to start the sixth inning, and gave up a single to Marwin Gonzalez and a walk to Brian McCann. He was relieved by Nick Vincent, who surrendered a line drive double to Alex Bregman, allowing both Gonzalez and McCann to score. The two earned- runs charged to Rzepczynski caused his ERA to rise from 3.10 to 3.72. The veteran southpaw has been a consistent bridge to the back end of the bullpen, and has 19 holds on the year, a career best. Consider Sunday's performance a minor blip on the radar.

Erasmo Ramirez delivers quality start

Erasmo Ramirez gave up two runs on two hits, while walking two and striking out five over six innings in the Mariners 6-2 loss to Houston on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision.

Fantasy Ramifications: Ramirez has been Seattle's most reliable starter lately, tempering the rash of injuries that have ravaged the team's rotation. The 27-year-old right-hander pitched well, with his only damage coming from a pair of solo shots from Yulieski Gurriel and Brian McCann in the fifth inning. The outing was Ramirez' fifth quality start in as many appearances, in which he has recorded an impressive 2.40 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 6.9 K/9. His next scheduled start is Sunday against the Angels at Safeco Field.

Mike Marjama makes big-league debut

Mike Marjama made his Major League debut on Sunday in Seattle's 10-2 victory over Oakland. He entered the game as a ninth-inning defensive replacement for Carlos Ruiz and did not come to bat.

Fantasy Implications: Marjama's contract was selected from Triple-A Tacoma on Friday. The 28-year-old backstop was acquired by the Mariners along with right-handed pitcher Ryan Garton from the Rays on August 6 in exchange for pitcher Anthony Misiewicz and infielder Luis Rengifo. He spent the entire year at Triple-A, both in Tacoma and Durham, batting .250/.321/.424 with 12 home runs and 63 RBIs. He offers no fantasy value at this time.

Zac Curtis designated for assignment

Zac Curtis was designated for assigment by Seattle on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Curtis was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Jacob Hannemann and Seth Franklin, who both were claimed off waivers from the Cubs. Curtis appeared in three games for the Mariners this season, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and giving up one homer over 4 2/3 innings.  He walked one and struck out one, but also plunked two batters and uncorked two wild pitches. He was acquired on November 23, 2016 from the Diamondbacks along with Jean Segura and Mitch Haniger in exchange for Taijuan Walker and Ketel Marte.  He offers no fantasy value, even if claimed on waivers by another big-league team.

Monday, September 4, 2017

Mitch Haniger goes yard

Mitch Haniger hit a solo shot into the left-center field seats in Seattle's 10-2 victory over the Athletics on Sunday.  He also doubled and finished the day going 4-for-5 with two RBIs.

Fantasy Implications: After an 0-for-15 slide, Haniger has regrouped going 11-for-21 with two home runs and seven RBIs in his last five games. The 26-year-old right fielder is now batting .262 with 10 HRs, 36 RBIs and 43 R for the year.

Robinson Cano blasts two-run homer

Robinson Cano went 4-for-5 Sunday blasting a two-run homer and hitting two run-scoring singles in Seattle's 10-2 win over the Athletics. He also scored twice.

Fantasy Implications: After not hitting a homer in 35 straight games, Cano has now gone yard in his last two. In addition, his six RBIs Saturday and Sunday also surpass the five RBIs he collected in his previous 27 games. Despite the power outage, the veteran second baseman still has 21 home runs and 68 RBIs on the year. And perhaps Cano's weekend performance will augur a slugging binge that will extend to the end of the season.

Yonder Alonso not in lineup

Yonder Alonso in not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros.

Fantasy Implications: Alonso will head to the bench with southpaw Dallas Keuchel on the mound for Houston. Danny Valencia will take his place at first base, and bat sixth.

Ben Gamel not in lineup

Ben Gamel is not in the lineup Monday for Seattle's game against the Astros.

Fantasy Implications: Gamel will retreat to the bench as the Mariners will deploy a heavy right-sided lineup against southpaw Dallas Keuchel. Gamel's woes at the plate may have also factored into the benching. In his last 10 games, the 25-year-old outfielder went only 4-for-36 (.111AVG), and seen his batting average plummet from .323 to .279 since the All-Star break. Taylor Motter will take his place in left field and bat ninth.

Jean Segura wraps trio of hits

Jean Segura went 3-for-4 with two singles and a double, and eventually came around to score on all three hits in Seattle's win against Oakland on Sunday. He also had a stolen base.

Fantasy Implications: Segura piggybacked on his first two September appearances, playing the role of table-setter with aplomb. He is 7-for-13 with two stolen bases to start the month, and has scored on six of his seven hits. The 27-year-old shortstop is batting .306 for the year with 37 RBIs, 68 R and 20 SB. The Mariners will need Segura to continue his fine play to have any realistic chance of a wild-card birth.

Carlos Ruiz homers and doubles

Carlos Ruiz went 2-for 3, hitting a solo-shot and a double in Seattle's 10-2 drubbing of Oakland on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: After an 0-for-13 slump over six games, Ruiz has now gone 4-for-7 in his last two games with two home runs and two RBIs. Manager Scott Servais gave the veteran backstop a breather in the ninth inning, allowing catcher Mike Marjama to make his Major League debut behind the plate. Ruiz playing time is limited (he has appeared in only 46 games this year) and thus he offers little fantasy value other than a cheap play in daily formats.

Nelson Cruz drives in run

Nelson Cruz went 1-for-3 Sunday with an RBI single in the eighth-inning in Seattle's 10-2 route of    Oakland. He also walked twice and struck out once.

Fantasy Implications: After a torrid pace in the first-two thirds of August, Cruz has cooled off lately. In the ten games prior to Sunday's contest, the veteran slugger was only 4-for-33 (.121 AVG) with no homers and three RBIs. His RBI single yesterday plated Yonder Alonzo, and was Cruz' American League leading 104th RBI. Look for Cruz to heat up again, as the Mariners attempt to qualify for a wild-card spot in the post-season.

Shae Simmons makes 2017 debut

Shae Simmons worked around one hit to pitch a scoreless ninth inning in Seattle's 10-2 win over Oakland. He also struck out two in the non-save situation.

Fantasy Implications: Simmons, who had been battling a forearm injury since pitching in a March 11 spring-training game, finally made his Mariners' debut. The 27-year-old right-hander was forced to miss the entire 2015 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery while a member of the Braves' organization. He pitched well in the seven appearances with Atlanta in 2016, posting a 1.35 ERA and 0.90 WHIP, albeit over only 6 2/3 innings of work. Simmons was the 40th pitcher used by Seattle this year, tying a Major-League record held by the Rangers in 2014.

Nick Vincent notches a hold

Nick Vincent pitched a perfect eighth inning to collect another hold in Seattle's 10-2 win over Oakland on Sunday.  He walked none and struck out none.

Fantasy Implications: Vincent has been a remarkable bridge to closer Edwin Diaz. The 31-year-old right-hander now has 26 holds on the season and only one blown save. He boasts an impeccable 1.87 ERA and 0.97 WHIP over 60 appearances and 57 2/3 innings of work, yielding only two homers over the season. Needless to say, Vincent is a major asset to fantasy formats that count saves.

Andrew Albers picks up win

Andrew Albers (3-1) surrendered only one run and one hit over six innings to pick up his third win of the season in Seattle's 10-2 victory over Oakland on Sunday. He struck out five and walked one.

Fantasy Implications: Albers had allowed no hits through the first five innings, but then relinquished his only hit of the game, a Matt Olson solo shot to lead off the sixth. The quality start was his best performance since being acquired by Seattle from Atlanta on August 11. The 31-year-old southpaw has been steady, pitching at least five innings in each of his four starts. He now sports a 3.43 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. With an average fastball of 87.9 mph and an unremarkable 6.86 K/9, Albers should be viewed as no better than a backend of the rotation starter.

Sunday, September 3, 2017

Ryan Garton makes Seattle debut

Ryan Garton threw two-thirds of an inning in relief allowing no runs and no hits in Seattle's win over Oakland on Saturday. He walked none and struck out none.

Fantasy Implications: Garton was traded to the Mariners from Tampa Bay on August 6 along with catcher Mike Marjama for minor league pitcher Anthony Misiewicz and minor league infielder Luis Rengifo. He took the spot on the 40-man roster that was occupied by catcher Tuffy Gosewich, who was designated for assignment. Garton was among a host of players called up to the big club from Triple-A Tacoma when rosters expanded September 1. The 27-year-old right-hander was 0-1 with Tampa Bay, and compiled an 8.71 ERA and 1.74 WHIP over 10 1/3 innings in seven appearances. Fantasy GM's should safely take a pass on Garton, as he offers no value currently.

Edwin Diaz collects win

Edwin Diaz (3-5) worked around a hit and a walk to pitch a scoreless ninth inning in Seattle's 7-6 victory over the Athletics Saturday evening.  He also struck out two.

Fantasy Implications: Diaz was summoned in the ninth inning to protect a 6-6 tie. After doing his job, the Mariners scored in the bottom of the frame when Jean Segura came home on a wild pitch, thereby giving Seattle the victory and Diaz the win. The 23-year-old righty has not allowed a run in his last five appearances, amassing four saves and a win in that span. He has saves in 19 of his 20 chances since July, and should be inserted into all fantasy lineups with confidence.

Yonder Alonso hits homer

Yonder Alonso hit a solo shot in the fifth inning to help propel Seattle to a 7-6 comeback victory over Oakland Saturday night. He finished the game going 2-for-4 with one walk and one strike out.

Fantasy Implications: Since coming over to the Mariners in an August 6 trade with the Athletics, Alonso has hit a respectable .278/.358/.458 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 22 games. He is on the strong side of a platoon at first base with Danny Valencia, and should be considered by fantasy owners in AL-only or deep leagues.

Marco Gonzales pitches four scoreless innings

Marco Gonzales gave up no runs on only two hits over four complete innings in the Mariners win over Oakland Saturday night. He struck out five and walked none.

Gonzales pitched beautifully in long relief, keeping the Athletics at-bay, and enabling Seattle to overcome a four-run deficit to a 7-6 comeback win. The 25-year-old southpaw threw a total of 54 pitches, 37 which were for strikes. Gonzales was just removed from the Mariners' rotation because of the difficulties he had in his five starts with the team, where he logged a 7.40 ERA and 1.98 WHIP. But after yesterday's performance, manager Scott Servais is considering Gonzales taking Yovani Gallardo's spot in the rotation according to Bob Dutton of The News Tribune. The Mariners' brass most likely are holding their collective breaths, and longing for the time when either James Paxton or Felix Hernandez will be ready to be activated from the disabled list.

Jarrod Dyson aggivates groin injury

Jarrod Dyson tweaked his groin Saturday against Oakland.

Fantasy Implications: Updating a previous report, Dyson is out of Sunday's lineup against the Athletics because he re-aggravated the groin injury that previously forced him onto the 10-day disabled list. The Mariners are hoping to have Dyson back by Tuesday when they face Justin Verlander and the Astros in Safeco Field.

Jean Segura scores winning run

Jean Segura went 3-for-5 Saturday evening, hitting a solo shot and two doubles in Seattle's 7-6 victory over Oakland. He also scored twice, including the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the ninth inning.

Fantasy Implications: Segura had been scuffling in his ten games prior to entering Saturday night's gem. He was hitting a poor .136/.191/.159, going 6-for-44 in that stretch, with only one stolen base and zero RBIs. Manager Scott Servais praised the 27-year-old shortstop saying, "He was aggressive on the bases, was driving the ball, made great plays at shortstop. We're a different ballclub when he plays that way.  Outstanding game from him today." Segura is still has a .302 AVG for the year with 19 stolen bases. Perhaps Saturday's performance will jumpstart Segura into playing has he did prior to his recent slump.

Jarrod Dyson not in starting lineup

Jarrod Dyson in not in the lineup Sunday against the Athletics.

Fantasy Implications: Dyson played in Friday and Saturday's contests after being activated from the disabled list for a strained groin. He went a combined 0-for-5. Guillermo Heredia will take his place in center field and bat eighth.

Mike Zunino not in lineup

Mike Zunino is not the lineup for Sunday's game against Oakland.

Fantasy Implications: Zunino gets a well deserved rest after playing in six consecutive games. He was very productive going 7-for-19 in that span. In Saturday night's game against the Athletics, the 26-year-old backstop went 2-for-3, including a solo shot and a double. It was his second long ball in as many games, and he now has 21 HR on the year. Carlos Ruiz will be taking his place behind the plate, and will bat ninth.

Yovani Gallardo involved in no-decision

Yovani Gallardo surrendered two runs on five hits over three innings in Seattle's 7-6 win over the Athletics Saturday night. He struck out two and walked two, and did not factor into the decision.

Fantasy Implications: Gallardo continues to display his inefficiency as a starter, needing a whopping 80 pitches to get through three innings of work. In fact, in his 22 starts this year, the veteran right-hander has lasted seven innings only once. To make matters worse, his proclivity to give up the long ball was also evident Saturday, as he coughed up two more gopher balls to opposing hitters. He has an unpalatable 1.7 HR/9 on the year, and has yielded at least one homer in seven of his last eight games. Gallardo's true role should be in long-relief, where earlier in the year he was very successful, allowing opposing batters to hit a meager .132/.233/.237 over 11 1/3 innings.

Robinson Cano hits homer

Robinson Cano crushed a Jharel Cotton fastball into the right-center field seats for a two-run dinger in Seattle's 7-6 win over the Athletics Saturday evening. He also singled and walked, going 2-for-4 for the night.

Fantasy Implications: Cano has been in somewhat of a power outage of late. Since his last home run on July 22, the veteran second baseman had not hit a long ball in 35 games, and was slashing a middling .261/.310/.351, with only 12 RBIs in that span. For the year, Cano has a .273 AVG, 20 HR, 80 RBIs and 66 R, numbers that are respectable, but not what most fantasy owners drafting him had planned, considering last year's .298 AVG, 39 HR, 103 RBIs and 107 R.

Christian Bergman outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma

Christian Bergman was outrighted to Triple A Tacoma on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Bergman was designated for assignment after pitching in relief against Baltimore Monday and Wednesday.  The 29-year-old  righty cleared waivers and was sent to Tacoma on an outright assignment.  Bergman has a 4-5 record with a 5.00 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 33 strikeouts over 54 innings with the Mariners this season. He could return again next week when the Rainiers finish their season.

James Paxton completes bullpen session

James Paxton felt no pain after throwing a 27-pitch bullpen session on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: The bullpen workout marked the first time Paxton was on a mound since a strained left pectoral muscle forced his departure from an August 10 start against the Los Angeles Angels. The 28-year-old left-hander was positive, and claimed, "I had no pain; no issues with my pec. It was a positive step in the right direction. The timing was a little bit off, but that’s to be expected." The tentative schedule is for Paxton to throw another bullpen on Tuesday and a simulated game on September 9. If all goes well, Paxton could return to the rotation four or five days later on a build-up basis.

Felix Hernandez throws bullpen session

Felix Hernandez reported no day-after problems Saturday after throwing a bullpen session on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: The bullpen workout was the first time Hernandez threw from a mound since renewed bursitis in his shoulder forced him to the disabled list after a July 31 start at Texas. The plans are for Hernandez to throw another bullpen on Monday and a simulated game on Sept. 8. If all goes well, the veteran left-hander could return to the rotation four or five days later on a build-up basis.

Gordon Beckham promoted from Triple-A Tacoma

Gordon Beckham has his contract selected from Triple-A Tacoma by the Mariners on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Beckham has been playing with the Rainiers since the start of the year, and has yet to see any big-league action in 2017.  The former White Sox second baseman was hitting .262/.313/.393 while at Tacoma, with nine home runs and 45 RBIs. He is expected to play a bench role for Seattle for the duration of the season. In a corresponding move, the Mariners designated Shawn O'Malley for assignment.

Shawn O'Malley designated for assignment

Shawn O'Malley was designated for assignment on Saturday. In a corresponding move, the Mariners selected the contract of veteran infielder Gordon Beckham from Triple-A Tacoma.

Fantasy Implications: O'Malley had yet to play for the big-club in 2017. The 29-year-old shortstop has suffered a variety of injuries this season, the latest being a concussion which has sidelined him since August 22.  He has appeared in three levels of the minor-leagues when available to play. At Triple-A Tacoma, he saw action in 20 games and slashed a paltry .205/.250/.282 with only four extra-base hits in 84 at-bats.

Mike Zunino hits homer

Mike Zunino went 2-for-3 Friday evening, including a solo shot into the right field bleachers in Seattle's 3-2 win over the Athletics.

Fantasy Implications: The home run was Zunino's 20th on the year, two shy of his career high back in 2014. The 26-year-old backstop has been seeing the ball well lately, hitting safely in seven of his last eight games. He is slashing .393/.452/.714 with two homers, three doubles and four RBIs, while watching his batting average rise from .224 to .235 in that span. Zunino is notorious for being a streaky hitter, and fantasy owners should currently take advantage while he is hot, especially in DFS contests.

Mitch Haniger drives in run

Mitch Haniger went 2-for-4, driving in one run, scoring once, and stealing one base in Seattle's 3-2 win over Oakland on Friday night.

Fantasy Implications: Haniger had been struggling at the plate after being activated from the disabled list on August 19, slashing only .147/.194/.294 over nine games. After going 0-15 in the last four of those games, the 26-year-old right fielder was relegated to the bench to clear his head. It seems to have worked. In his last two games since then, Haniger is 5-for-8, hitting one long ball, two doubles, four RBIs and scoring three times. Perhaps this is the impetus that will catapult Haniger to a strong late-season finish.

Kyle Seager doubles and hits sacrifice fly

Kyle Seager went 1-for-3 Friday evening, hitting a double and driving in a run on a sacrifice fly in the Mariners 3-2 win over Oakland.

Fantasy Implications: Seager became the fourth player in Mariners history to hit 30 or more doubles in five separate seasons. The 29-year-old third baseman struggled in August slashing a disappointing .223/.284/.404, but his season's .254 AVG, 19 HR, 69 RBI and 56 R should be paying dividends to most fantasy owners.

Marco Gonzales removed from rotation

Marco Gonzales was removed from the Seattle rotation to make room for newly acquired Mike Leake on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Gonzales was the odd-man out to be removed from the rotation, and should certainly have not caught anyone unawares. The 25-year-old southpaw was not able to last through five innings in any of his six starts, and compiled a woeful 8.25 ERA and 1.96 WHIP over 24 innings, while surrendering seven long balls. Manager Scott Servais indicated that Gonzales may return to the rotation. However, fantasy owners should not make the same mistake.

Edwin Diaz credited with save

Edwin Diaz earned his 31st save of the year, pitching a perfect ninth inning in Seattle's 3-2 victory over the Athletics Friday night.

Fantasy Implications: Diaz has righted the ship from his mid-August difficulties, which likely can be attributed to back spasms that he was suffering at the time. Since then, the 23-year-old fireballer has yielded no runs in his last four appearances, and no hits in his last three, lowering his ERA from 3.67 to 3.45, and his WHIP from 1.22 to 1.17. Fantasy GM's should continue to roster the youngster with confidence.

Mike Leake earns win

Mike Leake (7-12) picked up his first win in a Mariners uniform, yielding two runs on eight hits over seven innings in Seattle's 3-2 win over Oakland Friday. He struck out seven and walked one.

Fantasy Implications: Leake allowed hits to the first three men he faced in his Seattle debut, singles by Marcus Semien and Matt Joyce, and a run-scoring double by Jed Lowrie. Oakland's second run scored later in the inning on a Matt Olson ground out to second base. From there, the 29-year-old right-hander and the Seattle bullpen were solid, keeping Oakland scoreless the rest of the way. Leake, who struggled since the All-Star break with the St. Louis, will look to build on Friday's quality start when he faces the Astros Wednesday at Safeco Field.

Shae Simmons activated from DL

Shae Simmons was activated from the 60-day disabled list on Friday and recalled from a rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma.

Fantasy Implications: Simmons missed all of 2015 and most of 2016 recovering from Tommy John surgery. He last appeared in the Majors in 2016, pitching in relief while a member of the Atlanta Braves. The 26-year-old right-hander opened the season with Seattle on the disabled list because of a strained right elbow. He made 13 rehab appearances over the last two months with three different minor-league clubs. It is likely that Simmons will be used in middle relief for the rest of September.

Dan Altavilla recalled from Triple-A Tacoma

Dan Altavilla was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Altavilla has a record of 1-1 with the Mariners this year, posting an undesirable 5.19 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 34 2/3 innings, but an impressive 40/17 K/BB. The 24-year-old right-handed fireballer is expected to pitch in low-to-moderate leverage situations for the remainder of the season.

Jarrod Dyson activated from DL

Jarrod Dyson was activated from the disabled list on Friday. He started in center field and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Implications: Dyson was placed on the 10-day disabled list on August 19 (retroactive to August 17) with a right groin strain. The 33-year-old outfielder has 28 steals on the season, tied for third in the American League. He is batting .255 with five home runs, 30 RBIs and 56 runs scored.

Yonder Alonso is out of lineup

Yonder Alonso is out of the lineup Friday in Seattle's game against Oakland.

Fantasy Implications: Alonso will head to the bench with lefty Sean Manaea toeing the rubber for Oakland. Danny Valencia will take his place at first base and bat sixth.

Ben Gamel out of lineup

Ben Gamel is out of Friday's lineup in Seattle's contest against Oakland.

Fantasy implications: Gamel will retreat to the bench with southpaw Sean Manaea on the mound for the Athletics. The 25-year-old outfielder has been struggling mightily since the All-Star break, although he did break out with a five RBI performance on Monday. Guillermo Heredia will take his place in left field and bat seventh.

Leonys Martin traded to the Cubs

Leonys Martin was traded to the Cubs on Thursday for a player to be named later or cash.

Fantasy Implications: Martin was the Mariners' opening-day center fielder but spent much of the year at Triple-A Tacoma because of poor performance. The 29-year-old veteran slashed an anemic .174/.221/.287 in 34 games this year with the Mariners. The Cubs did not add Martin to their 40-man roster, but because he was acquired prior to Sept. 1, he will be eligible to play for them in the playoffs.

Samuel Gaviglio claimed off waivers by Kansas City

Samuel Gaviglio was claimed off waivers by Kansas City on Friday.

Fantasy Implicationsr: Gaviglio was claimed from Seattle and added to the Royals 40-man roster. The 27-year-old righty posted a 3-5 record with a 4.62 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 40/21 K/BB over 62 1/3 innings for the season. He is expected to pitch in low-leverage situations in September.
