Dan Altavilla recalled from Triple-A

Dan Altavilla was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: The Mariners recalled Altavilla to take the spot of Tony Zych who was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right-elbow flexor bundle strain. Altavilla has been on the shuttle between Seattle and Tacoma a number of times this year. He has not been with the big club since being optioned to Tacoma on July 3. Pitching this year in the majors, the 24-year-old right-hander has posted a 1-1 record with an unpalatable 5.46 ERA and 1.48 WHIP with two holds and four blown saves over 29.2 innings of relief. Unless he is able to reign in his lack of control (4.2 BB/9), his ERA is likely to remain high. Altavilla will most likely be sent back down to Tacoma when David Phelps is ready to return from the disabled list which is expected in the next few days.

Tony Zych placed on DL

Tony Zych was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to August 20 with a right elbow flexor bundle strain.

Fantasy Implications: Zych has been feeling tightness in his pitching elbow for the past few weeks, and seen a drop in his fastball velocity from 95mph to 90-93mph. The Mariners gave the 27-year-old reliever some extra days of rest, but his right elbow did not respond. Zych was having a fine year recording a 6-3 record with a 2.66 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. In a corresponding move, the Mariners recalled right-handed reliever Dan Altavilla from Triple-A Tacoma.

Robinson Cano collects RBI on Monday

Robinson Cano went 1-5 and drove in one run in Seattle's 6-5 win over the Braves on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Cano has experienced a power dearth lately, hitting his last home run 26 games ago back on July 22. In addition, Cano has only three RBIs to his credit in his last 16 games. Despite these numbers, the veteran second baseman has still been productive, logging a .308 AVG, .365 OBP with 11 runs scored in August. Cano's yearly totals (.274 AVG, 19 HR, 78 RBIs and 64 R) have  rewarded many fantasy managers, and it is best to keep him active in most fantasy settings.

Yonder Alonso drives in three on Monday

Yonder Alonso had a fruitful day at the plate, going 3-5 with two doubles, three RBI's and two runs scored in Seattle's 6-5 win over the Braves Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Following a sluggish start after being traded to the Mariners from Oakland on August 6, Alonso's bat has been heating up. He currently enjoys a modest eight-game hitting streak, slashing .433/.485/.633 with one homer, 8 RBIs and six runs scored. The 30-year-old first baseman has benefited fantasy owners in four categories, logging an impactful .273 AVG, 23 HR, 57 RBI and 58 R for the year. Alonso is on the strong side of a platoon with Danny Valencia, but should be deployed in most fantasy settings.

Andrew Albers earns win

Andrew Albers (2-0) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits while walking one over 5.0 innings to chalk up the win in Seattle's 6-5 victory over the Braves on Monday. He also struck out three.

Fantasy Implications: Albers has collected wins in each of his two starts since being called up to Seattle from Triple-A Tacoma. He has been filling in for James Paxton who is on the disabled list for a strained left pectoral muscle, and currently on a rehab assignment. Albers was recently acquired by the Mariners in a trade with Atlanta on August 11. The 31-year-old southpaw now sports a 3.60 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 10.0 innings of work. Fantasy owners should consider Albers only as a stopgap until Paxton is reactivated. Albers' middling 6.3 K/9 and 87.6 mph average fastball suggest owners may want to avoid him altogether.
