Marc Rzepczynski records save

Marc Rzepczynski struck out Chris Davis with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning to record his first save of the year in Seattle's nail-biting 7-6 win over the Orioles Wednesday afternoon. Davis was the only batter Rzepczynski faced.

Fantasy Implications: Rzepczynski was summoned to close out the game after Edwin Diaz almost failed to protect a three-run lead in the ninth. With the bases loaded and two outs, the veteran left-handed specialist quickly fanned Davis on three straight pitches to preserve Seattle's one run victory. Rzepczynski has been an invaluable member of the Mariners' bullpen this season. He has not allowed a run in his last nine appearances. For the year, his record is 2-0 with a 2.94 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 14 holds. Monday's save was Rzepzcynski's second save of his career, the first coming in 2014 as a member of the Indians. He should be considered in AL-only and deep leagues that count holds.

Thyago Vieria optioned to Triple-A Tacoma

Thyago Vieira was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: Thyago Vieira was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma Tuesday when the Mariners recalled pitcher Sam Gaviglio from the Rainiers.  Vieira, who was recalled on Monday, made his big-league debut that evening, pitching a perfect ninth inning with one strike out in Seattle's 11-3 loss to Baltimore. The 24-year-old right-handed flamethrower has regularly hit triple digits on the radar gun. It is possible he will be recalled when rosters expand in September. Manager Scott Servais said of Vieira, "I thought he handled himself very well.”

Sam Gaviglio recalled from Triple-A Tacoma

Sam Gaviglio was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma Tuesday and added to the Mariners 25-man roster.

Fantasy Implications: Gaviglio is expected to pitch in long relief, a role that Casey Lawrence and Christian Bergman occupied in recent days. Manager Scott Servais said, "We brought Sam Gaviglio back to serve in the bullpen as our length guy. He gives us length. He’s fresh and ready to go."

The 27-year-old righty logged an unremarkable 4.62 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 40/21 K/BB and 2.2 HR/9 over 62.1 innings in 12 appearances as a starter earlier this year with Seattle. His record is 3-5. In a corresponding move, the Mariners optioned Thyago Vieira and Casey Lawrence to Tacoma.

Jean Segura hits a pair of singles

Jean Segura went 2-4 with an RBI on Tuesday in Seattle's 3-1 win over the Orioles.

Fantasy Implications: Segura continues to be a model of consistency for the Mariners. In August, the 27-year-old shortstop is slashing .280/.379/.420 with 10 runs scored and five stolen base in 13 games. Though showing less power than his career best 20 home runs with Arizona last season, his hard contact percentage ( 27.5%) has not dropped appreciably in 2017. With a .369 OBP for the year, Segura should continue to contribute solid cross-category numbers from the leadoff spot for the the rest of the campaign.

Emilio Pagan records hold

Emilio Pagan pitched two complete innings of perfect ball, striking out four, to pick up his second hold of the season in Seattle's 3-1 win over Baltimore on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: Pagan, who has been used primarily in low-leverage situations, made easy work of the six Oriole batters he faced, needing only 20 pitches (17 thrown for strikes) to record the hold. Since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on May 22, the 26-year-old right-hander has compiled a 1-1 record with two saves, while recording a masterful 0.93 ERA, 0.69 WHIP, 9.3 K/9, 1.6 BB/9 and 0.3 HR/9 over 29.0 innings. His only blip was an August 3 loss to Kansas City. Pagan has not allowed a run in 11 of the 13 appearances he has been deployed in that stretch. Fantasy managers in leagues that count holds should keep on eye on Pagan, especially if he is to be used in higher leverage situations in the future.
