Nelson Cruz smacks another base hit

Nelson Cruz singled off of Blake Snell, one of only three Seattle hits on the day, as the Mariners were blanked by the Rays 3-0 on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: The single extended Cruz' hitting streak to 12 games. He has now hit safely in 19 of his last 20 games. The veteran designated hitter is now hitting .294/.376/.568 with 31homers and 100 RBIs. Fantasy managers should have him indelibly inserted into their lineups, then sit back and enjoy.

Yovani Gallardo charged with loss

Yovani Gallardo (5-9) was charged with the loss Sunday as the Rays blanked Seattle 3-0. He pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out six.

Fantasy Implications: Gallardo was vanquished by the long ball, surrendering a leadoff homer to Kevin Kiermaier, and a two-run shot in the seventh inning to light-hitting Adeiny Hechavarria. The veteran right-hander from Michoacan, Mexico now sports an ugly 5.75 ERA and 1.50 WHIP.  Fantasy owners should tread lightly before inserting him into their lineups. Gallardo is next scheduled to start on Saturday against New York in Yankee Stadium.

Casey Lawrence called up from Triple-A

Casey Lawrence was called up from Triple-A Tacoma Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Casey Lawrence was called up from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. The 29-year-old right hander has been a frequent commuter on the shuttle between Tacoma and Seattle. He was last optioned to Tacoma after pitching four innings of relief against Baltimore. Since coming to the Mariners after he was claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays on May 11, he is 1-0 with a 5.64 ERA and 1.48 WHIP.  Lawrence has been used almost exclusively in low-leverage situations, and is of little value in fantasy lineups. In a corresponding move, the Mariners activated outfielder Mitch Haniger from the disabled list.

Mike Zunino not in lineup

Mike Zunino is not in the lineup Sunday for Seattle's game against Tampa Bay.

Fantasy Implications: Zunino will take a deserved rest after catching five straight games. Carlos Ruiz will take his place behind the plate, and bat at the bottom of the order.  Zunino's bat may be starting to wake up. In the aforementioned five games, the 26-year-old went 6-15 with one home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Kyle Seager not in lineup

Kyle Seager is not in the lineup Sunday for Seattle's game against the Rays.

Fantasy Implications: Seager missed two games this week because of a severe stomach virus that caused him to lose 10 pounds. He did however play in Seattle's last two games.  It is possible he is sitting out Sunday's game to allow him more time to recover.  Taylor Motter, who was called up on Sunday, will take over at the hot corner, and bat sixth.

Yonder Alonso not in lineup

Yonder Alonso in not in the lineup Sunday for Seattle's game against Tampa Bay.

Fantasy Implications: Alonso will take a seat on the bench with southpaw Blake Snell starting on the mound for the Rays. Danny Valencia will take Alonso's spot at first base and bat out of the two-hole. Alonso is 9-24 (.375 AVG) with one homer, five RBIs, and four runs scored over his last six games.

Taylor Motter recalled from Triple-A

Taylor Motter was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: Motter parlayed a strong spring to a spot on Seattle's Opening Day 25-man roster. But after slashing a meager .204/.272/.355, he was sent down to Tacoma on July 24. The 27-year-old utility man did, however, manage to steal nine bases and hit seven homers with 23 RBIs and 24 runs scored. Because Motter's playing time will most likely be limited, he should be avoided in most fantasy settings. In a corresponding move, Danny Espinosa was placed on waivers for his unconditional release.

Jarrod Dyson placed on DL

Jarrod Dyson was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday because of a strained right groin muscle.

Fantasy Implications: Dyson has been battling the groin injury for several days, but his slow recovery compelled the Mariners to place him on the disabled list.  The move is retroactive to August 17. The 33-year-old outfielder has a .255 batting average for the year with five home runs, 30 RBIs, and 56 runs scored. Dyson and Houston's Jose Altuve lead the American League with 28 stolen bases. In a corresponding move, Seattle recalled right-hander Casey Lawrence from Triple-A Tacoma.

Sam Gaviglio optioned to Triple-A

Sam Gaviglio was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Gaviglio was summoned to the big club on Tuesday to provide a fresh arm in the bullpen, although he was not used in his brief stay. The 27-year-old right hander started 11 games for the Mariners earlier this season, logging a 4.62 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 62.1 innings. He is expected to be back up with the big club within a few weeks in a relief role. In a corresponding move, the Mariners activated outfielder Mitch Haniger from the disabled list.
