Nelson Cruz rips a trio of extra-base hits

Nelson Cruz went 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored in Seattle's 7-1 win over Tampa Bay Friday night.

Fantasy Implications: Cruz has been absolutely on fire the past few weeks. He extended his hitting streak on Friday to 10 games, and has now hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games played. All three of his hits Friday were for extra-bases, including two doubles and a mammoth solo shot into the upper deck at Tropicana Field, his 30th home run of the year. The 37-year-old designated hitter has ripped nine home runs thus far in August, while seeing his batting average rise from .273 to .289,  and now leads the American League with 98 RBIs. Needless to say, Cruz should be active in all fantasy lineups regardless of format.

Kyle Seager collects milestone RBI

Kyle Seager went 1-5 while driving in one run in Seattle's 7-1 win over Tampa Bay Friday night.

Fantasy Implications: Seager drove in his 500th career RBI in the first inning when he plated Robinson Cano on a ground out to second base. The veteran third baseman made his return to the lineup after a two game absence due to a brutal stomach virus. He has now compiled a .254 batting average with 18 home runs, 63 RBIs and 52 runs scored for the year.

Erasmo Ramirez records win

Erasmo Ramirez (5-4) yielded one earned-run on two hits while walking two and striking out four over six complete innings to earn the win in Seattle's 7-1 victory over the Rays Friday night.

Fantasy Implications: Ramirez has now administered two straight quality starts for Seattle, a huge bonus for the Mariners considering their depleted rotation and over-taxed bullpen. The 27-year-old right-hander was able to escape a bases loaded, one out jam in the second inning by inducing weak fly balks to both Adeiny Hechavarria and Daniel Robertson. Other than that, he was pretty much in control, throwing 57 of his 90 pitches for strikes. Ramirez now sports a 4.52 ERA, driven in part by his inability to miss bats (6.76 K/9), but a fine 1.15 WHIP.  His next scheduled start is Wednesday in Sun Trust Park against the Braves.

Jarrod Dyson not in lineup

Jarrod Dyson in not in the lineup in Seattle's contest against Tampa Bay Friday night.

Fantasy Implications: Dyson was kept back from playing Friday because of groin tightness. The Mariner organization has not given any details as the severity of the injury. He should be considered day-to-day until more information is revealed. Taking his spot in the lineup and playing centerfield will be Guillermo Heredia.

Edwin Diaz loses strike zone

Edwin Diaz, called on to save Wednesday's game against the Orioles, lasted only two-thirds of an inning after surrendering two earned runs, three walks, and two batters hit-by-pitch. He did not allow a hit.

Fantasy Implications: Diaz, who notched his 26th save the night before after pitching a perfect frame, saw his command and control run amok Wednesday. Summoned to protect a 7-4 Seattle lead in the ninth inning, the young right-hander walked the first three batters he faced to load the bases. Manny Machado then hit a sacrifice-fly to right field that could have potentially cleared the bases, were it not for a great sliding, backhand catch by Leonys Martin. Then, after striking out Jonathan Schoop, Diaz plunked the next two batters, allowing another run to score. With the bags full, he was relieved by Marc Rzepczynski, who was credited with the save after striking out Chris Davis on three pitches for the final out of the game. Diaz, who has been brilliant this season, has been able to rebound quickly after delivering a stinker such as this. If there was a silver lining to this poor outing, it is that Diaz did pick up his second hold of the year.

Guillermo Heredia is in lineup Friday

Guillermo Heredia is in the Seattle lineup Friday against the Rays.

Fantasy Implications: Heredia was forced to depart Wednesday's game against Baltimore after being hit on his forearm by a pitch uncorked by Ubaldo Jimenez. Fortunately the injury was benign. Heredia is 8-17 (.471 AVG) over his last five games. The 29-year-old sub is taking over for Jarrod Dyson, who is being withheld Friday because of a tight groin. Heredia will man center field and bat in the eight spot.

Kyle Seager back in lineup

Kyle Seager is in the starting lineup Friday against Tampa Bay, and will bat in his customary five spot.

Fantasy Implications: Seager missed the last two games because of a stomach virus. The 29-year-old third baseman claims he lost over 10 pounds because of the ailment that started last Sunday.  Seager's bat has cooled off somewhat in August (.204/.264/.469 slash line over 49 at-bats), yet still productive hitting a respectable four home runs with seven RBIs and eight runs scored.
