Peter Budaj to start on Tuesday

Peter Budaj will start in net for Tampa Bay in their road game against the Devils on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: Budaj will be making his season debut after Andrei Vasilevskiy patrolled the crease in the Bolts' first six games to launch the 2017-18 campaign. The 35-year-old Czech filled in admirably last year in Los Angeles when Jonathan Quick missed a chunk of time with a groin injury, posting 27-20-3 record, 2.12 GAA and.917 SV%.

Craig Anderson will start on Tuesday

Craig Anderson will start in net for the Senators in their home tilt against Vancouver on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: Anderson is coming off of a shutout win against Calgary on Friday. He has already faced the Canucks this season, turning aside 26 of 28 shots in Ottawa's win in Vancouver last week.  The 36-year-old netminder has 2-0-2 record this campaign, and sports a brilliant 1.65 GAA and .937 SV%. He squares off against a Vancouver club that is scoring an average of 2.25 goals per game (22nd in the league). Play him with all confidence.

Frederik Andersen to start on Tuesday

Frederik Andersen will be between the pipes for the Maple Leafs in their road game against Washington on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: Andersen turned aside 31 of 34 shots in his last start on Saturday in Toronto's 4-3 overtime win over the Canadians. Andersen is 4-1-0 for the season, but sports an unimpressive 3.76 GAA and .880 SV%. He faces Alex Ovechkin who leads the NHL with nine goals, and a Capitals team that is scoring an average of 3.67 goals per game.

Roberto Luongo will start on Tuesday

Roberto Luongo will be in net for the Panthers in their road game against Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: Luongo has not made back-to-back starts thus far since the 2017-18 campaign has gotten underway. He and James Reimer appear to be in a season-long timeshare for netminder responsibilities. Luongo is 1-1-0 in the two appearances he has made, logging a 3.06 GAA and surrendering six goals on 63 shots (.905 S%). He played well in his last start against St. Louis, making 37 saves on 39 shots. The veteran goalie will square off against a Flyers team that is averaging an eye-opening 4.20 goals scored per game.

Mike Green scores goal on Monday

Mike Green lit the lamp on one of his six shots in Detroit's 3-2 loss to the Lightning on Monday.  He finished the night with a plus-one rating for the game.

Fantasy Implications: Green now has nine points in six games, although Monday's tally was his first goal of the season. He is plus-3 for the year and has recorded four power-play assists. The 32-year-defenseman's days as a premier rearguard are over. However, because of his inherent offensive talent and substantial minutes on the ice, Green should continue to provide value to many fantasy owners.

Owen Tippett to make his NHL debut on Tuesday

Owen Tippett will make his NHL debut for the Panthers' road game against Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: Tippett was selected 10th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft by Florida because of his immense offensive potential. Last year, the 18-year-old right wing registered 75 points (44 goals, 31 assists) in 60 games with the OHL's Mississauga Steelheads. He is raw and needs polishing, and if not already selected, should be on the radar of fantasy owners in dynasty and keeper leagues. Tippett will be replacing Connor Brickley, and will skate on Florida's third line along with Jamie McGinn and Jared McCann.

Justin Abdelkader converts penalty shot

Justin Abdelkader scored a goal on a penalty shot, and added an assist in Detroit's 3-2 loss against the Lightning at Little Caesars Arena on Monday. He also registered two PIMs and finished the evening with a plus-one rating.

Fantasy Implications: Abdelkader was the first Red Wing to score on a penalty shot since Valtteri Filppula converted on December 15, 2017.  The 30-year-old veteran now has four points (two goals, two assists), four PIMs and a plus-two rating through six games. In his nine year career, Abdelkader has never exceeded 44 points, and adds value only to owners in deep leagues, or as an emergency forward.

Jimmy Howard attributed with loss

Jimmy Howard surrendered three goals on 26 shots to take the loss in the Red Wing's 3-2 defeat to Tampa Bay on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Howard was snakebit twice by Nikita Kucherov, one on a power-play goal on a wicked wrist-shot from the right circle, the other when Kucherov easily tapped in a puck lying in the crease between Howard's five-hole. Howard also conceded a shorthanded goal to Tyler Johnson, who scored on a breakaway after he stole the puck in his own zone. Howard's record now falls to 3-1-0, but he still maintains an excellent 1.97 GAA and .947 SV%. Howard may be in a timeshare with Petr Mrazek, decreasing his value for owners in weekly pools.

Tyler Johnson scores shorthanded goal

Tyler Johnson scored a shorthanded goal and registered a plus-one rating in Tampa Bay's 3-2 win over the Red Wings on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Johnson opened the scoring at 9:15 of the first period when he stole the puck inside his own zone and beat Trevor Daley down the ice, slipping the puck between Jimmy Howard's pads for the shorthanded tally. The 28-year-old center now has four points (three goals, one assist) and a minus-two rating through six games.  Now that the Bolts' are healthy, Johnson has been bumped down from a top-six role to the third line along with Alex Killorn and Slater Koekkoek, a testament to the depth and strength of Tampa Bay at center. Johnson continues to center the second power-play unit, and should be considered a valuable commodity in deep leagues.

Nikita Kucherov scores two goals on Monday

Nikita Kucherov netted two goals, including a power-play tally, in the Lightning's 3-2 road win against Detroit on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Kucherov has now potted seven goals in six games, and trails only Alex Ovechkin who leads the NHL with nine. Both lead the league with 10 points and an average of 1.67 points per game. Kucherov is part of the Bolts' top line along with Steven Stamkos and Vladislav Namestnikov, making up one of the scariest lines in all of hockey. The 24-year-old right wing is an elite and dynamic player, and one of the most proficient scorers with the man advantage. Last year he led the NHL with 32 power-play points (17 goals, 15 assists). It would not be surprising to see Kucherov contend this season for the Maurice Richard Trophy, awarded to the leading goal scorer in the NHL. Needless to say, he should be active in fantasy lineups regardless of format.

Andrei Vasilevskiy collects another win

Andrei Vasilevskiy turned aside 29 of 31 shots to pick up the win in Tampa Bay's 3-2 victory over the Red Wings in Detroit on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: With the victory, Vasilevskiy's record improves to a brilliant 5-1-0, and he now leads the league in wins. The 23-year-old Russian has made 192 saves on 210 shots for a .914 SV% and 3.00 GAA. He plays behind a high-flying Lightning team that is averaging 3.83 goals per game, but is also well disciplined defensively. Fantasy owners should play him with all confidence.

Jimmy Howard expected to start on Monday

Jimmy Howard will man the crease in Detroit's home game against the Lightning on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Howard sports a perfect 3-0-0 record while registering a superb 1.62 SV% and .955 GAA. The Lightning come into Little Caesars Arena with a 4-1-0 record and scoring 4.00 goals per game.

Andrei Vasilevskiy will start on Monday

Andrei Vasilevskiy will start in net in the Bolts' road game in Detroit on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Vasilevskiy comes into the game with a 4-1-0 record while making 163 saves on 179 shots (.911 SV%) and logging a 3.20 GAA. He squares off against the Red Wings club that is 4-1-0 and is averaging 3.40 goals for per game.

Erik Karlsson to make season debut

Erik Karlsson will make his season debut in Ottawa's home game against the Canucks on Monday.

Fantasy Implications: Karlsson is considered one of the elite blueliners in the game today. He missed the first five games of the 2017-18 campaign recovering from off-season surgery of a foot injury he sustained in last year's playoffs. The 27-year-old Swede finished last season with 71 points (17 goals, 54 assists) while recording 67 hits, a whopping 201 blocked shots and a plus-10 rating.  He should be rostered immediately in all fantasy settings.

Trent Taylor with two catches in Week 6

Trent Taylor corralled two of the five passes in which he was targeted for only 11 yards in San Francisco's 26-24 loss to the Redskins on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: This is the second straight week that Taylor has virtually been ignored, recording only three receptions for 17 yards and no scores in that span. Until the 23-year-old possession receiver sees a consistent uptick in usage and production, he is best left off fantasy rosters of any setting.

Aldrick Robinson with touchdown reception in Week 6

Aldrick Robinson hauled in two passes, including one for a touchdown, in the 49ers' 26-24 defeat to Washington on Sunday. He was targeted five times and totaled 66 yards.

Fantasy Implications: With about two minutes left in the game, and the 49ers trailing 26-17, C.J. Beathard found Robinson open down the sideline, and connected with him for a 45-yard touchdown reception. The 29-year-old SMU alumnus is listed as the fourth receiver on the 49er depth chart, and continues to be used sparingly, as has been the case his entire five-year career when he was a member of both the Falcons and Redskins. Through Week 6, three receptions are the most Robinson has recorded in any game this season. It would take an injury to one of the 49ers' starting wide receivers for Robinson to have any significant value to fantasy owners.

Marquise Goodwin with 32 total yards in Week 6

Marquise Goodwin caught two of the five passes thrown to him for 26 yards, and gained six yards on one rushing attempt in San Francisco's 26-24 loss to the Redskins on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: Fantasy owners who were banking on Goodwin to build upon his Week 5 performance of five receptions (11 targets) for 116 yards have to be disappointed. He was used sparingly, never being targeted in the red zone. The 26-year-old speedster continues to be used inconsistently, and remains a boom-or-bust, high-risk fantasy option from week to week.

Pierre Garcon with five receptions in Week 6

Pierre Garcon snagged five of his 12 targets for 55 yards in the 49ers' 26-24 loss to Washington on Sunday.  He did not score.

Fantasy Implications: Garcon led the team in targets, with all his receptions coming from C.J. Beathard after he replaced an ineffective Brian Hoyer at quarterback midway through the second quarter. Beathard's vitalization of the anemic 49er offense bodes well for Garcon and the rest of the club's receiving corps. If the changing of the guard from Hoyer to Beathard is indeed immutable, look for Garcon to have success in Week 7 against the 23rd-ranked Dallas defense.

Robbie Gould hits 52-yard field-goal

Robbie Gould connected on one of two field-goal attempts, and converted all three of his extra-point tries in the 49ers' 26-24 loss to Washington on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: Gould's 52-yard field-goal attempt with  9:41 left in the third quarter was good. On the 49ers' next possession, which stalled at the Washington 28-yard line, the 34-year-old-veteran pushed his 47-yard attempt wide right, his first miss after connecting on 32 straight field-goal tries dating back to the 2015 season. The benching of quarterback Brian Hoyer for rookie C.J. Beathard with about six and a half minutes left in the first half put life into the erstwhile moribund San Francisco offense. If the change is permanent, it may raise Gould's fantasy value for the remainder of the 2017 campaign.

Patrick Marleau tallies a goal

Patrick Marleau scored a goal in the Maple Leaf's 4-3 win over Montreal on Saturday. He finished the contest with a plus-two rating.

Fantasy Implications: The trio of Marleau, Nazem Kadri and Leo Komarov has made a formidable line to start the regular season, despite their difficulties developing a chemistry in the preseason. Marleau has registered five points (three goals, two assists), and has a plus-four rating through Toronto's first five games. Even at age 38, the longtime Shark is still known for his speed, which should help him produce a fair share of loose pucks on the forecheck. He is expected to see a good amount of ice time, including time on the power-play. Fantasy owners should anticipate a 45-plus point season from the 18-year veteran.

Austin Matthews scores again

Austin Matthews scored two goals, including the game winner in overtime, as Toronto beat Montreal 4-3 on Saturday. He also won nine of 13 face-offs (69%), and earned a plus-two rating.

Matthews has been nothing short of sensational to the start the 2017-18 campaign. He has scored at least a point in each of Toronto's first five games, compiling eight points (five goals, three assists) and earning a plus-seven rating.  The 20-year-old phenom possesses all the necessary skills to be one of the greats in the NHL. An 80-plus point season is not unrealistic, and by season's end he should be among the league's leaders in goals scored.

Frederik Andersen earns win

Frederik Andersen turned aside 31 of 34 shots to earn the win in the Maple Leaf's  4-3 overtime victory over Montreal on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: After surrendering his third goal of the game to Jonathan Drouin at 11:33 of the second-period, Frederik slammed the door shut on the Canadians the rest of the way. The 28-year-old Dane is Toronto's workhorse in net, and his club's potent offense should help him earn his share of wins, as evidenced by his 4-1-0 record through five games this year. His peripheral numbers, however, may be difficult for fantasy owners to swallow. Frederik has logged a distressing 3.76 GAA and .880 SV% this campaign.

Aaron Eckblad tallies a goal

Aaron Eckblad scored a goal and recorded two PIM's and a plus-2 rating in the Panthers' 4-3 loss against Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Eckblad has now registered four points (two goals, two assists), four PIM's and a plus-four rating through four games this year. The 21-year-old defenseman is coming off an injury marred 2016-17 season. If he can stay healthy this campaign, Eckblad is likely to tally 40-plus points, and has the potential to be one of the top young blueliners in the league.

Marc-Andre Fleury placed on injured reserve

Marc-Andre Fleury was placed on the injured reserve list on Sunday because of a concussion sustained in Friday's game against the Red Wings.

Fantasy Implications: Fleury is expected to miss at least a week. Malcom Suban is currently on first on the Golden Knights' depth chart to replace him, and will likely start tonight's game against the Bruins. Vegas recalled goaltender Maxime Legace from the AHL Chicago Wolves to take Fleury's roster spot.

Jonathan Huberdeau with a pair of goals

Jonathan Huberdeau lit the lamp twice, including once on the power-play, in the Panthers' 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday.  He finished the night at minus-1.

Fantasy Implications: Huberdeau has collected points in all four games he has played to start the season, scoring three goals and tallying two assists.  He currently stands at a minus-3 rating for the campaign. The 24-year-old left wing is on the Cats' dynamic top-line along with Aleksander Barkov and Evgenii Dadonov, and has the potential to be one of the NHL's top scoring forwards.

James Reimer saddled with loss

James Reimer surrendered four goals on 33 shots in the Panthers' 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Reimer has now allowed eight goals on 63 shots (.873 SV%) with a 4.07 GAA in the two games he has started this season. Despite the poor numbers, Reimer played fairly well tonight against the Penguins, but was hung out to dry on a pair of vintage Sydney Crosby goals (one on the power-play), and on a Cats' turnover in their own zone that resulted in a Greg McKegg shorthanded goal. Reimer is in a timeshare with Roberto Luongo, and is one of the more reliable backup goalies in the game.

James Reimer to start for Panthers

James Reimer will start in net for the Panthers' road game against Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Earlier today it was reported that Roberto Luongo would start. However, it was Reimer that led the Cats onto the ice and will start instead.  Reimer won in his only appearance of the season, stopping 26 of 30 Tampa Bay shots last Saturday.

Andrei Vasilevskiy to start on Saturday

Andrei Vasilevskiy will be between the pipes for the Lightning in their home game against St. Louis on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: In four starts to begin the season, Vasilevskiy has recorded a 3-1-0 record. He has been incredibly busy, stopping 135 shots on 150 attempts (.900 SV%) in that span for a 3.74 GAA. The 23-year-old Russian will face a Blues team that is 4-1-0 and is averaging 3.20 goals for per game.

Roberto Luongo is expected to start on Saturday

Roberto Luongo is expected to patrol the crease for the Panthers in their road game against Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Luongo was brilliant, turning aside 37 of 39 shots against the Blues on Thursday. In his two starts this season, the veteran goalie is 1-1-0 with a 3.06 GAA and .905 SV%. He squares off against the Penguins who are averaging 3.20 goals for per game.

Frederik Andersen between the pipes on Saturday

Frederik Andersen will start in net for the Maple Leafs' road game against Montreal at Bell Centre on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Andersen is 3-1-0 in his four starts to begin the season, thanks to Toronto's potent offense. In that span, the 28-year-old netminder has been shaky, registering an inferior 3.97 GAA and .871 SV%. Fortunately, he faces an offensively challenged Canadians team that has scored only five goals through five games. Of note, Toronto is 0-9-5 against Montreal since a win at Air Canada Centre on January 18, 2014.

Corey Crawford in net on Saturday

Corey Crawford will patrol the crease for the Blackhawks in their home contest against Nashville on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Crawford was pinned with his first loss of the season, surrendering three goals on 32 shots to the Wild on Thursday. He has played well, however, sporting a 3-1-0 record with a 1.50 GAA and .956 SV%. The 32-year-old squares off against the Predators, who are averaging 3.25 goals for per game.

Gustav Nyquist pots two goals

Gustav Nyquist tallied two goals and an assist in Detroit's 6-3 win over the Golden Knights on Friday. He finished the night at plus-one.

Fantasy Implications: Nyquist recorded his first points of the season, having been held off the scorecard in his first four games this season. The 28-year-old right wing has seen his shooting percentage and goal production decline annually since his breakout 2013-14 season, an obvious frustration to his fantasy owners. If Nyquist plays a more decisive game, as he did last season when Thomas Vanek was traded to Florida, he is capable of a 50-plus season.

Henrik Zetterberg records four points

Henrik Zetterberg scored a goal and dished out three assists in the Red Wings 6-3 win against Vegas on Friday. He finished the night with a team leading plus-four rating.

Fantasy Implications: Zetterberg has now compiled seven points (three goals, two assists) through his first five games this season. The 37-year-old captain refuses to slow down, and is clearly the stalwart of the Red Wings team. Last season he potted 17 goals and tallied 51 assists for a team-high 68 points, 20 more than Gustav Nyquist who was second. He also continues be extremely durable, playing in all 82 games the past two seasons. Zetterberg remains a reliable and safe fantasy option.

Mike Condon to start on Saturday

Mike Condon will be in net for the Senators in their road game against Edmonton on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Condon will be making his season debut a dangerous Oilers team led by Connor McDavid that has started the year with a disappointing 1-2-0 record, averaging only 2.33 goals for per game.  The 27-year-old goalie compiled an an admirable 19-14-6 record with a 2.50 GAA and .914 SV% last season while filling in for Craig Anderson who missed a chunk of time to care for his ailing wife.

Petr Mrazek credited with win

Petr Mrazek turned aside 24 of 27 shots to earn the win in Detroit's 6-3 victory over the Golden Knights on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Mrazek is now 1-1-0 in the two games he has started this campaign with a 3.08 GAA, surrendering six goals on 59 shots (.898 SV%). Detroit actually trailed 3-2 after two periods, but the team responded with four unanswered goals, and Mrazek making stops on the Golden Knights' six shots on goal in the final stanza. It appears that Mrazek will be taking a backseat to Jimmy Howard as the Red Wings' No. 1 netminder, and it is anyone's guess how playing time will be divided between the pair.

Cody Ceci registers two points

Cody Ceci scored a goal and was credited with a rare power-play assist in Ottawa's 6-0 win over Calgary on Friday. He also blocked four shots and finished the night at plus-one.

Fantasy Implications: Ceci was able to record an assist during his total of eight seconds of power-play time on ice, feeding a beautiful pass to Mike Hoffman that led to a Hoffman goal. Last year, the 23-year-old defenseman tallied only 17 points (two goals, 15 assists). Through four games of the 2017-18 campaign, he already has two goals, an assist, three hits and 10 blocked shots. His lack of power-play time, however, limits his offensive potential. Ceci is best used in fantasy leagues that count hits and blocked shots, where last year he registered 111 and 159 respectively.

Friday, October 13, 2017

Mark Stone collects two points

Mark Stone had a productive game, scoring a goal and tallying an assist in the Senators' 6-0 win over Calgary on Friday. He also finished the night at plus-two, delivering two hits and blocking a pair of shots.

Fantasy Implications: Stone now has four points (three goals and one assist) and is plus-seven through four games. The 25-year-old right wing is currently playing on the second-line with Derick Brassard and Bobby Ryan, and consistently sees a good amount of ice time, including the power-play on either the first or second unit. Stone should contribute 50-plus points through the course of the season, and should be considered a solid addition to any fantasy roster.

Craig Anderson records shutout

Craig Anderson corralled all 25 shots to earn his first shutout of the season in Ottawa's 6-0 win over the Flames on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Anderson has started each of the Senators' first four games of the season, and now sports a 2-0-2 record with an impressive 1.65 GAA, surrendering only seven goals on 111 shots (1.65 SV%). The 36-year-old goalie missed a considerable amount of time last year because of his wife's cancer treatments, but was magnificent in the 2017 playoffs. Barring injuries or personal matters, Anderson should make 50-plus starts this campaign, and should be rostered in most fantasy settings.

Thomas Chabot tallies an assist

Thomas Chabot recorded his first-ever NHL point with an assist to Ryan Dzingel in Ottawa's 6-0 drubbing of the Flames on Friday. He finished the evening with a team-leading plus-three rating.

Fantasy Implications: Chabot is Ottawa's highly touted top defensive prospect, and is known for his two-way skills. He became the first defenseman to be named the most valuable player of the World Junior Championship last January. The 20-year-old was recalled from AHL Belleville on October 8 because of injuries to Ottawa defensemen Erik Karlsson, Johnny Oduya and Ben Harpur. Chabot may not render immediate fantasy value, but should certainly be owned in all dynasty and keeper leagues. With his tremendous talent, Chabot is set to be one of the NHL's next stupendous rearguards.

Ryan Hartman dishes out power-play assist

Ryan Hartman scored a goal and tallied a power-play assist while delivering two hits and finishing at plus-one in the Blackhawks 5-2 loss to Minnesota on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Hartman had been held without a point in his previous two games, but still has eight points (two goals and six assists) through five games this season, thanks to his five-point outburst in Chicago's season-opener against Pittsburgh. The 23-year-old wing is currently playing on the second-line with Artem Anisimov and Patrick Kane, and on the second power-play unit. If he is able to maintain his top-six role, Hartman should have no trouble breaking the 31 points (19 goals and 12 assists) he achieved in last year's campaign.

Corey Crawford credited with loss

Corey Crawford surrendered three goals on 32 shots to suffer the loss in the Blackhawks' 5-2 defeat  to Minnesota on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: The loss was Crawford's first of the season, as he came into Thursday's game with a perfect 3-0-0 record. The 32-year-old netminder has started the season admirably even with the loss, logging a 1.50 GAA through four games, and giving up only six goals on 136 shots (.956 SV%). With Scott Darling moving on to Carolina, and an inexperienced Anton Forsberg as his backup, Crawford will see the lion's share of starts for Chicago. Fantasy owners can expect him to make 60- plus starts, and to realistically win 35-plus games because of the solid team still supporting him.

Petr Mrazek in net on Friday

Petr Mrazek will start in net for the Red Wings in their road game against Vegas on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Mrazek lost his only game played this season against Dallas, surrendering three goals on 32 shots. Once considered Detroit's future No. 1 goalie, Mrazek has fallen out of favor because of poor performance and attitude, and has been relegated as Jimmy Howard's backup. The 25-year-old Czech will square off against a surprising undefeated Vegas squad that is sporting an average 3.00 goals for per game.

Nick Bjugstad tallies two points on Thursday

Nick Bjugstad scored a goal and added an assist in the Panthers' 5-2 win over St. Louis on Thursday.  He also blocked one shot and delivered one hit while finishing the evening with a plus-one rating.

Fantasy Implications: Bjugstad has now tallied four points (two goals and two assists) is plus-four in Florida's first three games to start the season. He is currently on the third-line with Jared Mccann and Connor Brickley. The 6-foot-6 forward presents a formidable presence in front of the net and is know for his quality finishing skills. He has missed 43 games in the past two seasons due to a variety of injuries and is hopeful to make up for lost time. Bjugstad's time on the ice has thus far been limited (12:38 TOI), but if he stays healthy a 40-plus point season is not out of realm of possibility.

Craig Anderson to start on Friday

Craig Anderson will patrol the crease for Ottawa's road game against the Flames on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Anderson has played fairly well to start the season, recording a 1-0-2 record and 2.15 GAA. He has surrendered seven goals on 86 shots for a .919 SV%. The 36-year-old veteran will be facing off a Calgary team that has won three straight and is averaging 3.00 goals for per game.

Jared McCann collects two points on Thursday

Jared McCann netted a power-play goal and dished out an assist in the Panthers' 5-2 win over St. Louis on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: McCann has tallied four points (two goals and two assists) through three games this season, more than doubling the seven points (one goal and six assists) he recorded last year with Florida over 29 games. The 21-year-old, who was a first-round draft choice (24th overall) of Vancouver in 2014, spent much of last season in AHL Springfield. He is currently centering the Panthers' third-line along with Connor Brickley and Nick Bjugstad, and is also a part of the second power-play unit. McCann still needs time to develop, and at this time offers little fantasy value except to those in deep and dynasty leagues.

Cory Schneider will start on Friday

Cory Schneider will be between the pipes in the Devils' home game against Washington on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Schneider has been brilliant to start the season, recording an unblemished 3-0-0 record and a 2.00 GAA, while stopping 110 of 116 shots (.948 SV%). He squares off against the Capitals, who are averaging 3.75 goals for per game.

Vincent Trocheck scores shorthanded goal

Vincent Trocheck lifted a shot high on the glove side of Blues goalie Jake Allen for a shorthanded goal in the Panthers' 5-2 win over St. Louis on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Trocheck now has three points (two goals and one assist) with a plus-one rating through three games. He is logging an abundance of ice time (22:59 TOI), centering the second-line along with Jamie McGinn and Radim Vrbata, and is frequently deployed on the first power-play unit. With his blazing speed, the 24-year-old is cementing himself as an integral piece of the Panthers' young club, and is capable of a 60-plus point season.

Braden Holtby to start on Friday

Braden Holtby will start in net for the Capitals in their road game against New Jersey on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Holtby is 2-1-0 to start the season, allowing eight goals on 107 shots (.925 SV%) with a 2.62 GAA. He faces an undefeated New Jersey team (3-0-0) that is averaging a whopping 5.33 goals for per game (second only to Toronto).

Ian McCoshen scores goal on Thursday

Ian McCoshen netted one of his two shots in Florida's 5-2 win over the Blues on Thursday. He also recorded one hit, one blocked shot, two minutes in the penalty box, and finished the evening with a plus-one rating.

Fantasy Implications: The goal was McCoshen's first of his brief NHL career. The 22-year-old defenseman was called up by the Panthers from AHL Springfield at the end of last season, and appeared in three games, recording one assist. He has suited up for the three games Florida has played so far this year, and has been paired with Alex Petrovic on the blue line. His bottom pairing and lack of power-play minutes limit his fantasy value at this time.

Aaron Ekblad collects two points

Aaron Ekblad potted a goal and dished out a power-play assist in Florida's 5-2 victory over the Blues on Thursday.  He finished the night with a plus-three rating.

Fantasy Implications: Ekblad now has three points (one goal and two assists) and a plus-two rating through three games.  He is averaging 21:22 time on ice, including 2:35 on the power-play and 3:06 when short-handed. The 21-year-old defenseman has suffered a number of serious concussions already in his young career. If Ekblad can stay healthy, however, he is capable of being one of the top young defenders in the game. He and Keith Yandle comprise Florida's top defensive pair, and with the talent of the rest of the team's core Ekblad should be able to register 40-plus points.

Roberto Luongo credited with win

Roberto Luongo turned aside 37 of the 39 shots he faced in the Panthers 5-2 win over St. Louis on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: It was Luongo's 454th career victory, which ties him with Curtis Joseph for fourth place for the most all-time NHL wins for a goalie. The 38-year-old netminder is now 1-1-0 for the season with a 3.06 GAA and .905 SV%. He is Florida's No. 1 goalie but will be in a virtual time share with backup James Reimer.

Martin Jones in net on Thursday

Martin Jones will patrol the crease for the Sharks in their home game against Buffalo on Thursday.

Fantsy Implications: Jones was pulled Saturday against the Kings after allowing four goals on 29 shots. He has started the 2017-18 season slowly, posting an 0-2-0 record with a poor 5.17 GAA and giving up eight goals on 59 shots (.864 SV%).  Jones faces a Sabres team that has also started out slowly with an 0-2-1 record and averaging 2.33 goals for per game.

Robin Lehner to start on Thursday

Robin Lehner will start in net for Buffalo in their road game against the Sharks on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Lehner who took a puck to the face in practice on Wednesday, will suit up to patrol the crease on Thursday. He has made three appearances to start the season, posting a 0-1-1 record with a 3.22 GAA and .908 SV% (59 saves on 65 shots). The Sabres defense has been porous thus far, surrendering six goals in each of its last two games.  Lehner faces a Sharks team that has scored an average 2.00 goals for per game and has allowed an average 4.50 goals against per game.

Jacob Markstrom to start on Thursday

Jacob Markstrom will defend the net for the Canucks in their home game against Winnipeg on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Markstrom has fared well in the the two games Vancouver has played thus far to start the season.  The 27-year-old Swede is 1-0-1 with a 1.94 GAA, and has stopped 73 shots on 77 attempts (.948 SV%).  He will be facing a Jets team that comes into Vancouver with a formidable 3.33 average goals for per game.

Connor Hellebuyck to start on Thursday

Connor Hellebuyck will patrol the crease for Winnipeg, as they travel into the Rogers Arena to face the Canucks on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Hellebuyck has gone 1-0-0 in one start and one relief appearance to start the season, making 46 saves on 50 shots (.920 SV%). The 24-year-old netminder has looked decisively better than a struggling Steve Mason who has surrendered 11 goals already through two games.  Hellebuyck goes into Vancouver to square off against a Canucks team that is 1-0-1 and averaging 2.50 goals for per game.

Ben Bishop to start in net Thursday

Ben Bishop will defend the cage for Dallas in their road game against the Predators on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Bishop has gone 1-0-0 in the two games he has played this season, while allowing only two goals on 44 shots (.955 SV%) and logging a 1.15 GAA. He will go into Nashville to face the Predators who are 1-2-0 and averaging 3.00 goals for per game.

Andrei Vasilevskiy to start on Thursday

Andrei Vasilevskiy will start in net for the Lightning in their home game against Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Vasilevskiy has gone 2-1-0, starting in all of Tampa Bay's contests this season. He has allowed 11 goals on 110 shots (.900 SV%) with a 3.66 GAA, numbers that do not bode well against a potent Penguin's offense. Pittsburgh comes into Amalie Arena with a 2-1-1 record.

Jake Allen to guard the net Thursday

Jake Allen will start between the pipes for St. Louis in their road game against the Panthers at BB&T Center on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Allen has started the season winning three straight games (3-0-0), while registering a .930 SV% (eight goals on 123 shots) and recording a 2.58 GAA. He will come into Florida to square off against a 1-1-0 Panthers team.

Roberto Luongo to start on Thursday

Roberto Luongo will defend the cage in Florida's home game against the Blues on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Luongo was tagged with the loss in the Panthers' season opener in Tampa Bay, allowing four goals on 24 shots. He will take on a formidable St. Louis team that comes in at 4-0-0.

Corey Crawford will start on Thurdsay

Corey Crawford will be between the pipes in Chicago's home game against the Wild on Thursday.

Fantasy Implications: Crawford has been stellar to start the 2017-18 campaign, recording a 3-0-0 record with a 1.00 GAA and .971 SV%. He takes on a Wild team that has started 0-1-1.

Semyon Varlamov makes 20 saves

Semyon Varlamov stopped 20 of 23 shots to pick up the win in the Avalanche's 6-3 victory over the Boston on Wednesday.

Fantasy Implications: Varlamov has played well to start the season, recording a 3-0 record with a 1.67 GAA and .945 save percentage (86 saves on 91 shots). The 29-year-old goalie is considered Colorado's No. 1 netminder, with Jonathan Bernier being his backup. Injuries limited Varlamov to only 24 games last season, and he will probably make less then the 55-plus starts he has been accustomed to in the past. Though Varlamov is capable of a bounce-back campaign, fantasy owners should not expect top-tier numbers, as the Avalanche did not make major improvements from last campaign's dreadful club.

Cory Schneider makes 47 saves

Cory Schneider stopped 47 of 50 shots to pick up the win in the Devils 6-3 victory over the Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

Fantasy Implications: Schneider has been superb to start the season, recording a 3-0 record with a 2.00 GAA and .948 save percentage making 110 saves on 116 shots. The 31-year-old goalie is New Jersey's unequivocal No. 1 netminder, and should be making his usual 60-plus starts. Behind a revitalized club, look for Schneider to improve on last year's 20-27-11 record, 2.82 GAA and .908 save percentage.

Brandon Saad nets goal on Tuesday

Brandon Saad scored a goal in Chicago's 3-1 win over the Canadians on Tuesday. He finished the night with a plus-1 rating and two blocked shots.

Fantasy Implications: Saad's return to Chicago after a two-year stint with the Blue Jackets has been nothing short of sensational. He has seven points (five goals and two assists) and a plus-7 rating through four games. The 24-year-old left wing has thus far been a key member of Chicago's formidable first line along with Jonathan Toews and Richard. His 18:51 average time on ice and 3:35 average power-play time on ice bodes well for a productive 2017-18 campaign. Fantasy owners should expect Saad to have no problem registering a fourth straight 50-plus point season.

Corey Crawford earns third straight win

Corey Crawford allowed only one goal on 42 shots in the Blackhawk's 3-1 win over Montreal on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: Crawford was outstanding as he outdueled Canadian's netminder Carey Price. Crawford slammed the door shut on Montreal after surrendering an early goal at 1:15 of the first period to Tomas Plekanec, and despite being outshot 42-to-15. The 32-year-old goalie has won each of his first three games to start the season, and sports a stellar 1.00 GAA and .971 save percentage. He now has a career 8-0-2 record against Montreal.

Brian Elliott pinned with loss

Brian Elliott surrendered six goals on 31 shots in the Flyers' 6-5 loss against Nashville on Tuesday.

Fantasy Implications: Elliott was staked with a 5-3 lead one-third of the way through the third period, but allowed three goals the rest of the way to take his first loss of the 2017 campaign. The 32-year-old goalie won his first two games, making 53 saves on 58 shots (.914 save percentage). The Flyers  have started the season with four games on the road, and will look forward to their home-opener on Saturday. Moose is considered the No. 1 netminder for the Flyers, but how he will split time with Michal Neuvirth has yet to be determined.

Guillermo Heredia udergoes right shoulder surgery

Guillermo Heredia underwent surgery on his right shoulder on Monday in Miami.  He should be ready for Spring Training in February.

Fantasy Implications: Heredia had surgery to repair a tear of his shoulder labrum that resulted in a chronic shoulder separation during the course of the 2017 campaign.  According to Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto, Heredia had to have the dislocated shoulder put back in place on at least four separate occasions during the course of the year, which likely effected his performance offensively. The 26-year-old Cuban outfielder finished the season with a .249/.315/.337 slash line with 43 runs, six homers and 24 RBIs in 386 at-bats. He is expected to compete for the starting center field role next season.

Trent Taylor with only one catch in Week 5

Trent Taylor hauled in one of the two passes thrown his way, gaining only six yards in the 49ers' 26-23 loss to Indianapolis on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: It was disappointing to fantasy owners to see Taylor play second fiddle to tight end George Kittle as Brian Hoyer's primary possession receiver in Week 5. Taylor had seen a gradual increase of utilization up until then. The 23-year-old Louisiana Tech alumnus was on the field for only 35 of his club's 70 offensive snaps, and targeted just twice. He will need to see more targets on a consistent basis to gain any sort of fantasy value.

Marquise Goodwin gains 116 yards in Week 5

Marquise Goodwin hauled in five of 11 targets for 116 yards in the 49ers' 26-23 loss to Indianapolis on Sunday.  He did not score.

Fantasy Implications: Goodwin led the team in yardage, helped by a 51-yard reception from Brian Hoyer.  The 26-year-old speedster also tied Pierre Garcon for the team lead in targets. It was significantly Goodwin's most productive game of the season, and unexpected after he was limited in practice and listed as questionable this week because of a concussion suffered in last week's 18-15 loss to the Cardinals. His 11 targets easily surpassed the six-target maximum he saw in Weeks 1 and 2.  Fantasy owners should consider Goodwin a high-risk play until he can show more consistent production.

Robbie Gould perfect again

Robbie Gould was a perfect 3-for-3 on field-goal attempts and 2-for-2 on extra-point conversions in the 49ers' 26-23 loss to Indianapolis on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: Gould connected on field-goals of 28, 43 and 40 yards. He has now made 31 straight field-goal attempts going back to the 2015 season. The 34-year-older's consistency, combined with the 49ers' red zone struggles, make him a high-floor, low-ceiling kicking option for the 2017 campaign.

Evgenii Dadonov collects two points

Evgenii Dadonov potted a power-play goal and dished out an assist in the Panthers 5-4 victory over Tampa Bay on Saturday night.

Fantasy Implications: Dadonov has returned to the Panthers afters spending five years in the KHL. He scored 66 points (30 goals and 36 assists) for SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL last season. The 28-year-old right wing finally reunited with Florida after signing a three-year, $12 million contract with the Panthers on June 30. He has already hit stride as a member of the Panthers top-line along with Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov. He will play a key role in Florida's power-play unit, as attested by his 5:30 of ice time with the man advantage on Saturday.

Colton Sceviour scores a goal

Colton Sceviour posted a goal and a minor penalty, while dishing out a hit and blocking one shot in Florida's 5-4 win over the Lightning on Saturday night.

Fantasy Implications: Sceviour is on the checking-line along with Derek Mackenzie and Michael Haley, and sees virtually no power-play time. He provides little fantasy value to fantasy owners in shallow leagues. However, he is used heavily in shorthanded situations and is regarded for his two-way play. Thus he can contribute somewhat to owners in very deep leagues and those that count peripheral stats. Last year the 28-year-old forward played in 80 games, registering 24 points (nine goals and 15 assists) while delivering 108 hits.

James Reimer picks up win

James Reimer saved 26 of 30 shots to earn the win as the Panthers beat Tampa Bay 5-4 on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Reimer allowed two early first-period goals to Nikita Kucherov and Vladislav Namestnikov, and a goal in each of the second and third periods, but the Panther offense came on strong to give the 29-year-old goalie the win. Though Reimer is considered the backup netminder to Roberto Luongo, the duo will be in somewhat of a timeshare this season. Expect Reimer to make at least 30 starts throughout the course of the campaign.

Will Butcher credited with three helpers

Will Butcher dished out three assists in New Jersey's 4-1 victory over the Avalanche Saturday afternoon.

Fantasy Implications: Each of Butcher's assists came on the power-play, earning him the first star of the game in his NHL debut. The Hobey Baker winner logged 12:45 of ice time, with 3:23 coming on the man advantage.  Teams will certainly test his diminutive 5-foot-10, 190-pound frame, yet Butcher has all the tools to become a dynamic blueliner and power-play quarterback.

Cory Schneider brilliant in win

Cory Schneider saved 40 of the 41 shots the Avalanche sent his way to lead the Devils to a 4-1 win over Colorado on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Schneider is coming off a regrettable 2016-17 season, posting 2.82 goals against average and a .908 save percentage for a Devils team that finished last in the Eastern Conference. Look for Schneider to rebound this campaign, with a revamped New Jersey team that on paper appears to be one of the more improved teams in the NHL. The 31-year-old netminder will be the irrefutable workhorse between the pipes, with backup Keith Kinkaid occasionally starting to give Schneider a needed breather.

James Reimer to start on Saturday

James Reimer will be between the pipes for the Panthers' home-opener against the Lightning on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: Roberto Luongo started the first half of the home-and-home set against Tampa Bay yesterday, so Reimer will start the second half tonight. Although Luongo is considered the No. 1 goalie entering into this season's campaign, the duo will be in an essential time-share. The numbers posted by both in 2016-17 were nearly identical. The 38-year-old Luongo's days as a workhorse playing 60 plus games are over, meaning Reimer should see at least 30 starts this year.

Jonathan Huberdeau scores goal on Friday

Jonathan Huberdeau scored a goal while recording two shots and one hit in the Panthers 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday. He finished the evening with a minus-2 rating.

Fantasy Implications: Huberdeau logged 18:57 of ice time Friday, including 4:18 on the power-play.  Last year he was limited to only 31 games because of an Achilles injury, but still managed to record 26 points (10 goals, 16 assists). This season he is on the top-scoring line with Aleksander Barkov and Evgeny Dadonov. If able to stay healthy, the 24-year old should put up career numbers through the end 2017-18 campaign.

Connor Brickley scores goal

Connor Brickley potted his second career NHL goal in Florida's 5-3 loss to the Lightning on Friday.  He was also credited with two hits and one blocked shot, and was only one of four Panthers who ended the night with a plus rating.

Fantasy Implications: Brickley's only other goal scored was back in 2015, during his first stint with the Panthers. He spent all last year with AHL Charlotte, a minor league affiliate of the Hurricanes.  The 25-year-old pivot signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Panthers on July 1. He offers little to no value in the vast majority of fantasy leagues.

Roberto Luongo saddled with loss

Roberto Luongo was credited with Florida's 5-3 loss to the Lightning on Friday night. He made 20 saves on 24 shots.

Fantasy Implications: Luongo allowed a couple of soft goals, one by Ondrej Palat who slipped the puck between Luongo's pads, and another by Brayden Point who scored on a shot from an odd angle. The 38-year-old Luongo and James Reimer form a solid netminding duo, and all signs point to another timeshare situation going into 2017-18. Unfortunately trying to figure out which goalie will start on any given night will not be easy.

Thomas Greiss pulled in second period

Thomas Greiss was pulled at 11:50 of the second period after allowing five goals on 26 shots in the Islanders' 5-0 loss to Columbus on Friday night.

Fantasy Implications: Following an excellent preseason, Greiss scuffled in his 2017-18 regular season debut, surrendering four even-strength goals and one power-play tally to five separate Blue Jackets.  The 31-year-old netminder was relieved by Jaroslav Halak, who is scheduled to tend the twine in Saturday's home-opener against Buffalo. Islanders coach Doug Weight is expected to ride the hot goaltender to start the season, which may not bode well for fantasy owners of Greiss. When Greiss faltered down the stretch of last season, it was Halak who started and won five straight critical games as the Isles battled for the final Eastern playoff spot.

Roberto Luongo to start on Friday

Roberto Luongo will be between the pipes against the Lightning in Tampa Bay on Friday.

Fantasy Implications: Luongo finished last year with a respectable .914 save percentage and a 17-15 record.  He was limited to 40 games because of injury.  Although still considered the No. 1 netminder for the Panthers, the 38-year-old Luongo is expected to be in a time-share with backup James Reimer.  Fantasy owners should no longer anticipate Luongo starting 60-plus games has he was accustomed to do in years past.

Trent Taylor with five catches in Week 4

Trent Taylor was targeted 10 times and made five receptions for 47 yards in the 49ers 18-15 loss to Arizona on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: The 10 targets for Taylor in Week 4 surpassed the total of nine he saw in the first three weeks of the season. The rookie from Louisiana Tech played exclusively from the slot even when wideout Marquise Goodwin was forced to exit the game early because of a concussion, and fared surprisingly well against All-Pro nickel back Tyrann Matthieu. Taylor, who is known for his good hands and crisp route running ability, makes for a possible flyer for PPR owners in Week 5 when he goes against a leaky Colts defense next Sunday.

Aldrick Robinson leads team in yardage and targets in Week 4

Aldrick Robinson hauled in three passes on 12 targets for 52 yards in the 49ers' 18-15 loss to Arizona on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: Robinson essentially took over Marquise Goodwin's outside receiver spot when Goodwin was forced to leave the game early with a concussion.  Although he led the team in targets and receiving yardage, Robinson was only able to corral three passes due to a couple of drops and Brian Hoyer's inaccuracy. The 12 targets were double those the 29-year-old speedster saw during the first three weeks of the season. Goodwin is in concussion protocol and is currently considered questionable for Week 5. If he is unable to play, Robinson may be of fantasy value against a porous Colts defense that is yielding 283.5 yards per game.

Robbie Gould accounts for all of 49er scoring

Robbie Gould went a perfect 5-for-5 in field-goal attempts, accounting for all of San Francisco's scoring in the 49ers' 18-15 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.

Fantasy Implications: In a game that saw no touchdowns scored in regulation time, Gould was able to convert field-goals of 49, 39, 47, and 48 yards, equaling Arizona kicker Phil Dawson's 4-for-4 perfect day, sending the game into overtime tied 12-12.  The 49ers later in the overtime period had a first-and-goal at the Arizona eight-yard line, but had to settle for Gould's 23 yard field goal, putting San Francisco ahead 15-12. Arizona then won the game on the ensuing seven-play 75 yard drive, culminated by Carson Palmer's 19-yard pass to Larry Fitzgerald. Gould is now a perfect 11-for-11 on field-goal attempts this year, and has now successfully converted 28 straight field-goal attempts, a streak that goes back to the 2015 season.

James Paxton allows no runs in season's final start

James Paxton allowed no runs on three hits, walking none and striking out nine over six innings in Seattle's 6-2 loss to the Angels on Sunday.  He did not factor into the decision.

Fantasy Implications: Paxton lobbied hard to to toe the rubber Sunday for the Mariners final game of the 2017 campaign, and his persistence paid off. It was his first quality start since coming off the disabled list for a pectoral injury September 15. The 28-year-old southpaw finishes the year with a 12-5 record while recording a stellar 2.98 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 156/37 K/BB across 136 innings. Now considered the Mariners' ace, the team will look to Paxton to build upon this season's success. Barring injury (something Paxton has had difficulty doing throughout his career), he should make a quality number-one fantasy starter for the 2018 campaign.

Edwin Diaz earns save

Edwin Diaz hurled a perfect 1 1/3 innings to pick up his 34th save in Seattle's 6-4 win over the Angels on Saturday. He also struck out two.

Fantasy Implications: Diaz was summoned in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and two outs, and was able to get Mike Trout out on an infield fly to second base. He then pitched a clean ninth inning to earn the save. The 23-year-old right-hander rebounded nicely following Friday night's blown save, his first since July 22. Diaz has an elite 97 mph that has translated into a superb 12.1 K/9 for the year.  If he is able to correct his occasional bouts of wildness (4.4 BB/9), Diaz will be among the company of premier closers for the 2018 campaign.

Mitch Haniger hits a triad of doubles

Mitch Haniger went 5-for-5 with three doubles and one run scored in Seattle's 6-4 win over the Angels on Saturday.

Fantasy Implications: The perfect night at the plate completes a very productive September for Haniger. In 27 games during the month, the 26-year-old outfielder slashed a phenomenal .365/.387/.635 with seven home runs, 14 RBI, and 17 runs scored. He also saw his seasonal batting average rise about 40 points, from .248 to .285. Haniger has settled in well batting second in the Seattle lineup, and looks to be the Mariners' right fielder for years to come.
