Andrew Albers suffers loss

Andrew Albers (2-1) encountered his first loss in a Seattle uniform Sunday, allowing eight runs (three earned) on 11 hits while walking two and striking out four over five complete innings in the Mariners 10-1 loss to the Yankees.

Fantasy Implications: Albers had virtually no chance of earning a win Sunday after the Mariners' defense committed five errors in the first inning, immediately putting the team behind 6-1. Yet the Yankees had no problems solving the 31-year-old southpaw, as attested by the aforementioned 11 hits he allowed. Albers' 4.20 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and .338 opponents batting average are evidence of his failure to miss bats, and likely will continue to haunt him at the big league level. His next scheduled start is Saturday against the Athletics at Safeco Field.

Carlos Ruiz hits solo shot

Carlos Ruiz deposited a Sonny Gray fastball into the Yankee Stadium left field bleachers for a solo homer in Seattle's 6-3 loss Saturday against New York. He also singled, finishing the day 2-4.

Fantasy Implications: The solo shot and single were Ruiz's only hits in August. The seldom used backstop was 0-15 for the month coming into Saturday's affair. Ruiz has appeared in only 45 games this season, logging a .213 AVG, 2 HR, and 10 RBI over 108 at-bats. Unfortunately, his fantasy value has been long gone since his glory days in Philadelphia.

Robinson Cano in Sunday's lineup

Robinson Cano is in Sunday's lineup against the Yankees, and batting third in the order.

Fantasy Implications: Cano has been nursing a sore hamstring that prevented him from starting the first two contests of the three-game series against New York. However, he was able to come off the bench as a pinch-hitter both Friday and Saturday. The veteran second baseman will look to build on his season's .276 AVG, 19 HR, 78 RBI and 64 R.

Yovani Gallardo suffers another loss

Yovani Gallardo (5-10) was credited with the loss on Saturday after surrendering four runs on four hits over 5.2 innings in Seattle's 6-3 defeat to the Yankees. He walked five and struck out four.

Fantasy Implications: Another start for Gallardo, and another subpar performance. The veteran right-hander continues to struggle as a starter, allowing opponents to hit an ugly .285/.356/.494 against him. On the other hand, Gallardo did prove to be quite effective as a member of the bullpen earlier this summer, curbing hitters to a trifling .132/.233/.237 slash line over 11.1 innings in four appearances. It would not be surprising to see Gallardo removed from the rotation to the bullpen once James Paxton and Felix Hernandez are reinstated from the disabled list. Nor would it be surprising if fantasy owners have not already removed Gallardo from their rotations either.

James Pazos bags win

James Pazos (4-4) earned a win after pitching a perfect 10th inning in Seattle's 2-1 win Friday over the Yankees.

Fantasy Implications: Pazos was summoned in the 10th inning to preserve a 1-1 tie. He was credited with the win after teammate Yonder Alonzo clubbed a game-winning solo homer in the top of the 11th. After struggling in July, the 26-year old left-handed reliever was encouraged to use his slider more often. The results have been nothing short of stellar. In his eight August appearances, Pazos is 2-1 with a 0.00 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 10.0 K/9. He has only one hold since July 16, and thus provides little fantasy value.

Ariel Miranda sustains no decison on Friday

Ariel Miranda (8-6) pitched 4.2 scoreless innings Friday, yielding two hits and four walks while striking out three in Seattle's 2-1 win over the Yankees. He did not factor into the decision.

Fantasy Implications: In his five August starts, Miranda has not been able to make it into the sixth inning. The 27-year-old southpaw was relieved Friday by Emilio Pagan after throwing an inefficient 99 pitches, of which only 52 found the strike zone. On the bright side, it was the first time in six starts he did not surrender a long ball, and only the third time in his last 14 outings. Miranda now has a 4.62 ERA and 1.20 WHIP on the season, and is certainly not a safe fantasy option. His next scheduled start is Wednesday against the Orioles at Camden Yards.

Mike Zunino not in lineup

Mike Zunino is not in the lineup Saturday for Seattle's game against the Yankees.

Fantasy Implications: Zunino will take a seat for a well deserved rest after appearing in 14 straight games for the Mariners. The slugging catcher was 3-5 against the Yankees on Friday night, one triple short of hitting for the cycle. Carlos Ruiz will take his place behind the plate and will bat ninth in the order.
