Nelson Cruz smacked a Miguel Castro 95.7 mph slider for a solo shot over the left-field wall in Seattle's 11-3 loss to the Orioles Monday night. Cruz went 1-4 for the night.
Fantasy Implications: Cruz is wielding a scorching bat as of late. In August, the veteran designated- hitter has hit eight home runs with 16 RBIs and 10 runs scored, while slashing a draw-dropping .396/.423/.979 in 48 at-bats. He now has 29 homers on the year, and is on pace for hitting 40 for his fourth consecutive season. It goes without saying, he should be active in all fantasy lineups.

Yovani Gallardo hit hard on Monday
Yovani Gallardo (5-8) was feckless Monday as he was pounded early and often in Seattle's loss to the Orioles Monday evening. Gallardo gave up eight earned runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out four over four innings.
Fantasy Implications: Gallardo's first pitch, a 91 mph fastball lined into the right field bleachers by Tim Beckham for a home run, was a harbinger of things to come. Of the eight hits yielded by the 31-year-old righty, five went for extra-bases, including a grand slam by Manny Machado in the second frame. He was mercifully taken out the game after throwing 99 pitches, and giving up a double to Adam Jones to start the fifth inning. Gallardo actually had success when he was relegated to the bullpen in late June, compiling a 1-0 record with a 0.79 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and earning one save in four relief appearances over 11.1 innings. Since regaining his role in the rotation on July 23, he has not made it into the sixth inning in any of his four starts. Gallardo now sports a doleful 5.84 ERA and 1.51 WHIP on the year. His renowned days as a starter in Milwaukee are now a distant sight in the rear-view mirror.

Christian Bergman optioned to Triple-A
Christian Bergman was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.
Fantasy Implications: Bergman, who was recalled Saturday, made two relief appearances in his brief stint, allowing no runs, on two hits, three strikeouts and walking none over five complete innings against the Angels. The 29-year-old right-hander was sent down to Tacoma because of the lack of his availability the next few days. He his likely to be recalled again when the Mariner's need a fresh arm in the bullpen. In a corresponding move, the Mariners called-up rookie right-hander Thyago Vieira from Tacoma.

The 24-year-old right-handed flame-thrower will now become the fourth Brazilian-born player in Major League history. He is expected to initially be used in low-leverage situations. In seven appearances with Tacoma, after being promoted from Double-A Arkansas on July 19, he compiled a 3.18 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 10/6 K/BB, while earning two saves. In a corresponding move, Seattle optioned Christian Bergman to Tacoma.

Robinson Cano doubles in loss
Robinson Cano went 3-4 on Sunday, including a double and a run scored, as the Angels completed a four-game sweep of Mariners.
Fantasy Implications: Cano has not hit a home run in his last 18 games, a stretch dating back to July 22. Nor has he driven in a run in his last nine contests. Yet he continues to be productive at the plate. He has hit safely in 12 of his past 14 games, and because seven have been multi-hit games, he has been able to maintain a respectable season AVG (.277) and OBP (.338). The 34-year-old second baseman, after all, still boast of 19 HR and 75 RBIs on the year. It's just a matter of time before fantasy owners see those numbers rise.

Ariel Miranda tagged with loss
Ariel Miranda (7-6) allowed four runs (all earned) on four hits and six walks, while striking out six in Seattle's 4-2 defeat to the Angels on Sunday. He was charged with the loss.
Fantasy Implications: Miranda's last win was back on June 30. Since July, he has made it past the sixth inning in only one of his last seven starts. A chief reason is his severe fly-ball tendencies (52.2 FB%) which have lead to a noxious 12 home runs being hit over the 37.1 innings (2.91 HR/9) he has pitched in those starts. Although control has not been issue for Miranda up to now, the six walks on Sunday were the most the Cuban left-hander has allowed all year. Until he can right the ship, Miranda should, if at all possible, be avoided in all fantasy formats.

David Phelps may rejoin bullpen next weekend
David Phelps may be ready to rejoin Seattle's bullpen in time for the upcoming weekend series against the Rays in Tampa Bay.
Fantasy Implications: Phelps was placed on the 10-day disabled list August 8, after he was forced to exit a game against Kansas City with an elbow impingement two days prior. The 30-year-old right-handed reliever was originally expected to miss two-to-three weeks, but it now appears he will be on the shorter end of that projection. Phelps will throw from a mound in the next couple of days to test his recovery. If all goes well, he is not expected to need a minor-league rehab assignment. Phelps, since joining the Mariners on July 20 after a trade with Miami, has a 1-1 record and three holds, while recording a 2.57 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 14.1 K/9, and 1.3 BB/9. He should be an asset to fantasy managers in leagues that count holds.
